Interview
1. Cru cru Katja Macabre, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. First and foremost, what got you into music?
Why hello there! Nice to chat with you too!
I've loved music for as long as I can remember.
I was raised by dancers, so I was always being played all sorts of really obscure music from Busi Mhlongo to David Bowie.
I was taken to a pre-school as a kid where my dad would sing into my ear and I would make sounds back to him, so I guess that was my first introduction to it.
When it comes to alt/rock music, I remember being on my way to a vocal lesson once and hearing Aeroplanes by B.O.B and Hayley Williams on Capital FM when I was a kid and that got me into Paramore, which got me into all the alt stuff I'm into today!
2. What is "Brains" and why is it so damn edgy and epic?
Hahah, well a brain is the wet, squishy thing most people have in between their ears...emphasis on MOST! But, the song "Brains" is my love letter, my call to arms to those who've been affected by sexual harassment, sexual assault, had their rights to abortions taken away...
It's a song with many meanings to be interpreted by those who need it however they feel is right for them.
3. What's your top 3 nu - metal records of all time?
Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park
Ten Thousand Fists - Disturbed
Fallen - Evanescence
4. What’s the best advice you ever gave?
I was once told by Annie Lennox "Just fucking do it!" when I asked her what advice she could give me about wanting to write about controversial issues. So I often just parrot that.
5. How is your experience as an indie artist going?
Pretty fucking well, thanks! I've been working on getting here for a long time! So it feels somewhat like the universe is saying "Hey kid, job well done!" at the moment, which is really nice.
6. Who was playing on your headphones when you were growing up?
Lots of Black Veil Brides, Falling in reverse, Evanescence, Icon For Hire, Young Guns and Mallory Knox And then on the flipside to that; KT Tunstall, Corrine Bailey Ray, Jack Johnson, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and I had an amazing compilation album that I still love to this day which was Pop Princesses Volume 1 which had Avil Lavigne, P!nk, Amy Studt and a whole bunch of amazing pop girls on it from the early 2000's!
7. Who's your favourite artist from the dark - pop scene?
A S H N I K K O !!!!!!!!! Need I say more!?!?!?!?!
8. Do you consider yourself a music - nerd?
YEP! I have grades in music theory....I went to music university, two music colleges, studied music in highschool, primary school, took private lessons, obsessed over bands my whole life and have a career doing nothing but making music.....I think I might have a problem..... !
9. What’s your favorite movie of all time?
Tough question! Would have to be a toss up between The Grand Budapest Hotel - Wes Anderson or Coraline - Henry Selick (Neil Gaiman).
10. Do you agree with the Pigeon?
Depends what the pigeon is asking! But I do think Pigeons are cute and it's a shame that people domesticated them, had enough of them and now think of them as vermin! Viva the homing pigeons!!!!
Review
I have to mention the initial unbearable noise of "Brains" which warned me how disconcerting this innovative banger was going to be. I have to confess that I've never heard a fusion of sinister circus beats and playful, theatrical performances worthy of Wonderland if the madness of that movie was taken to the extreme and the characters were Rated R!!! I have to go and test my mental health after being completely transformed by this artistic banger from the deep web. Furthermore, I also admire the more conventional, explosive and epic chorus inspired by what nu-metal has always accustomed us to!!! don't you dare miss these super edgy and macabre performances!!!
The Pigeon added the new single to his Weekly Gems playlist on Spotify. You can check out the released music below. If you like what you hear, make sure to follow along so you can stay on top of future releases!
