Letters From a Dead Man - My Only Fear Remains Unseen

"My Only Fear Remains Unseen" is a conceptual album about memory, melancholy, and the echoes that remain of love.

Presented as an intimate journey through the final moments of a man’s life, each song emerges as a letter — at times a love confession, at others a whisper of nostalgia, a glimmer of hope, or the inevitability of resignation. In the end, what remains is the echo of a life intensely felt, and the fragile beauty of having loved, even when it hurt.

"Letters From a Dead Man" is the name of a conceptual project envisioned by Hugo Piquer Branco and Ricardo Filipe Bóia, born from a collection of solitary letters, now transformed into haunting songs. They are tales of love and hate, passion and solitude—stories woven into music by one who lives through the final days of his existence.

Interview with Letters from a Dead Man

What inspired the concept behind My Only Fear Remains Unseen?

The concept behind this album continues the narrative developed throughout the entire project. It portrays a person at the end of their life, reflecting on the experiences and emotions that defined their existence. The album remains faithful to this central idea, exploring memories, challenges, and the ongoing effort to overcome one’s deepest fears.

How did the idea of letters shape the songwriting on this album?

It influenced everything. That’s truly the core idea behind the album and the entire project. Ricardo and I have always loved intimate songs with deep lyrics and melancholic instrumentals. Incorporating that concept throughout the album came very naturally.

What drew you to explore the final moments of a man’s life as a narrative?

I’ve always been fascinated by conceptual storytelling — whether in books, films, series, or music. I believe it makes projects far more engaging, both creatively and for the audience.
As I had been writing songs for a while, I began to notice that my lyrics told stories about life itself. From that realization, it felt only natural to develop this concept further.

How do you balance melancholy with moments of hope in the music?

We always try to maintain a balance between both sides. That duality also reflects who we are as individuals. We believe that even after great hardship and vulnerability, there’s always room for hope. We aim to express that as sincerely as possible in our music.

ree

Which song best captures the emotional core of the album?

Good question… I’d say the album works as a whole, with a strong connection between every song. However, if we had to choose one, we’d say “Aimless” perfectly encapsulates the essence of the record — lyrically, emotionally, and instrumentally.

How do personal experiences influence the themes of love and loss in your work?

We try to separate the project from our personal lives as much as possible, but inevitably, our experiences find their way into the music. There’s undeniably a part of us in every song.

ree

What was the most challenging part of creating such an intimate, conceptual project?

The greatest challenge was conveying exactly what we wanted to express. We had many ideas throughout the process, and some were left aside because they didn’t fully capture the melancholic tone of someone writing letters and recounting their story. We wanted this work to feel like a journey — one the listener could truly experience and understand.

How do you approach turning solitary reflections into collaborative music?

It’s not something we’ve given much thought to yet, but if the opportunity arises — why not? Every project adapts to its circumstances. We’re open to any future collaborations.

ree

What do you hope listeners take away after experiencing this album?

We hope listeners grasp the concept behind the project, but above all, that they enjoy the music and connect with it — whether or not they fully understand the narrative.

Where do you see Letters From a Dead Man evolving in future projects?

Over the years, we’ve felt the project evolve naturally, without pressure or forced direction. We’re proud of the journey so far. We’ll keep writing songs and sharing them with our audience. What matters most is to keep walking this path — and above all, to enjoy it. The story will continue.
