ARTIST INTERVIEW: MARY KNOBLOCK

Cru cru MARY KNOBLOCK, super nice to have the chance to chat with you! First and foremost what got you into music?

Thank you Pedro! I was introduced to music really young in life with learning the classical guitar and piano and flute. My parents were both musical as well and that influenced me a lot. I took music seriously as a producer when I got out of college and discovered I had always wanted to compose music but didn't really know how yet. So I had a friend who did stuff with synths and he showed me how to create music electronically a bit and I learned from an online DAW back in the day and was hooked. The first electronic symphony I composed, Crowns of Gold, was circulated in the movie scene by a A&R in Hollywood and I really just became obsessed with making music. Soon after a second song "Robot Gold" was discovered and the rest is history. From there I dove into the music industry with an awesome A&R who helped me learn the ropes of the business and I just kinda woke up in the industry one day. I'm humbled to be here as there's a lot of other amazing artists out there, so I try to make the best of what I have and help others along the way now in Produced by a Girl.

What’s the best decade for music?

The 1980's although I loved the 1970's too. I mean you just can't compare the two.

What's your favorite album from the americana scene?

I'm going to say Lana Del Rey's latest album -Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd. I mean I feel like she's reformed the 1940's and 1970's singer/songwriters.

What’s the best advice you ever gave?

You own your center of gravity - a good friend taught me that so I can't take credit for it, but it's really centering for me and others I tell it to as well.

How is your experience as an indie artist going?

It's been wonderful. The first five years were incredibly challenging but now I feel like I'm getting back to art and music and the fun of it, and that's a great place to be.

What is "Heaven's Bride" and why is it so cinematic?

Heaven's Bride is a love story, and a story of love and war. A story of a bride and reconciling love with the complexity of life, love and war all colliding together. If you're spiritual it can have deep spiritual meanings too. There's a couple layers in it you'll notice with a lot of overlapping things happening at once. From beginning in beauty and love to ending in the quest of keeping love. It's cinimatic because it's written in a story form or short movie scene or poem. It doesn't follow a standard song structure so it feels really really broad and vast and can have an overall powerful feel of all the emotions. I think that's why it feels that way.

What's your top 5 albums from the singer-songwriter genre?

Lana Del Ray, Taylor Swift, Suki Waterhouse, Tori Amos, Bjork

Do you consider yourself a music - nerd?

Total nerd. :) But if I'm quizzed on music it's hard to recall names and titles of albums. But trust me, I've listened to everything throughout all the decades. We're in a really incredible time for music. Compared to the renaissance and baroque periods, this is the third most pivotal one in my music nerd opinion.

What’s your favorite movie of all time?

Pride and Prejudice - the last rendition. It's a classic and full of amazing literary genius by Jane Austen.

Do you agree with the Pigeon?

100% The Pigeon is always right. ;)

Who is your inspiration?

My inspirations are me, the alchemist, MF DOOM, smoov-e, Dj quick, System of a Down, and the avalanche's

Do you consider yourself a music - nerd?

I am not a music nerd no. I am music.

What’s your favorite movie of all time?

My favorite movie is the matrix

Do you agree with the Pigeon?

Do I agree? Hmm everyone has their own truths. I'm not here to judge nor validate.

Review

In "Heaven's Bride", Mary Knoblock gives us an extremely memorable live performance! Emotionally powerful piano keys place us between heaven and hell, with Mary's angelic voice perfectly complementing the hell established by the melody. This isn't the biblical fiery hell we're used to visualizing, but an existential black hole that more closely resembles the emptiness that death is usually associated with. Don't you dare miss this cinematic soundscape!

The Pigeon added the new single to his Weekly Gems playlist on Spotify. You can check out the released music below. If you like what you hear, make sure to follow along so you can stay on top of future releases!
