ARTIST INTERVIEW: CURTIS NOWOSAD

Interview

1. Cru cru, what first got you into music?

My folks are both musicians so there was always music around—my mom taught piano lessons in the house— and I tried a few instruments before settling on the drums, but once I started playing, what really got me into music was hearing John Bonham from Led Zeppelin. I was also a huge fan of Black Sabbath, Rush & Metallica early on before discovering jazz as a teenager.

2. What would you do if you had a time machine?

Is this a single use time machine or an unlimited use time machine? If unlimited I’d probably be a history tourist, traveling to various different eras and locations throughout history just to experience them. If single use I’d probably go hear Coltrane at the Vanguard—as tempting as it would be to rewrite history, I’d have to stick to Back to the Future rules.

3. What’s your favorite album of all time?

Tough call as there are a few contenders, but since I’ve got a sound wave tattoo of A Love Supreme on my arm, I’d have to go with that one.

4. Will you tell us something embarrassing about you?

Though I grew up watching a lot of TV, there are a huge number of iconic movies, both from history and ones that I should have seen as a child that I’ve never seen—but as a kid I was embarrassed enough about this that I developed a keen skill of learning enough about movies to pretend I had seen them. I’m coming clean today, Pigeon—I’ve never seen Jurassic Park, Casablanca or Citizen Kane.

5. What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

Setting aside time for it and making a point to release myself from dogma and established patterns—just because something worked in the past or I was told to do things a certain way when I was younger doesn’t mean that’s how I have to do it today, and in fact, I want to do things differently. So I try to set aside time to just play. Yes, play music, but also “play” the way a child does—explore and try new things and see what works and what doesn’t with no agenda in mind.

6. Are you a music fan?

God I hope so.

7. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

Aside from being a meme aficionado, Wikipedia ambassador and having an encyclopedic knowledge of The Simpsons, I enjoy running as a activity—I ran three half marathons last year, though I haven’t been running much since my son was born—and I am deeply interested in mental health. I have several friends that can attest that I am basically an amateur therapist and even small talk with me usually progresses into discussing feelings and experiences.

8. What movie do you love the most?

Not sure that I have a favorite but seeing as we’re heading into December, the one that I watch every year is “Scrooged” with Bill Murray—I can probably recite the whole thing right now.

9. Who came first? The Pigeon or the egg?

Both—the pigeon was inside the egg.

10. Do you agree with the Pigeon

Emphatically, yes!
