On Better Off, the indie-rock project refines its melancholic edge into a masterclass of cathartic slow-burn atmosphere

There is a distinct moment in a band’s trajectory where the initial charm of raw potential hardens into genuine, intentional craftsmanship. For me, that moment arrived with Yogurt’s latest single, "Better Off".

Having tracked their steady string of melodic releases over the last few years, I’ve always admired their knack for capturing everyday anxieties. But where previous tracks leaned into familiar indie-rock structures, Better Off takes a massive leap forward into a far richer, cinematic atmosphere. From its opening notes, the song wraps you in a haze of pristine, late-night nostalgia reminiscent of Transatlanticism-era Death Cab for Cutie filtered through a modern, hazy Real Estate lens.

The production here is stunningly deliberate. The crisp, driving drum line acts as a steady anchor against a swelling tide of reverb-drenched guitars. What truly stands out to me, though, is how the songwriting handles emotional weight. The vocal performance feels beautifully unhurried, delivering lines about self-preservation and painful departures with a vulnerable, conversational ease. The track builds toward a brilliant, slow-burn climax where the guitar textures overlap and lock into place. A cathartic release that feels completely earned. It’s a beautifully melancholic piece of indie rock that proves Yogurt is releasing catchy singles and creating sonic worlds at the same time.
