Year of the Dead Bird sharpen their chaos into something wiry, and oddly catchy

On Songs In The Key Of Trash, Vol. 1, the San Diego trio turn experimental rock into a game of controlled derailment

I hear a band that understands how to make disorder feel intentional. Year of the Dead Bird’s Songs In The Key Of Trash, Vol. 1 is billed as a 2026 EP, and the loops, ambient electronics, punk snap, math-rock tension, noise-rock abrasion line up with a record that seems built on friction. What grabs me is the way the humor in titles like “Nü Ranch” and “1-800-Pity-Party” sharpens it. The trio’s references to Battles, Lightning Bolt, The Locust and early Deerhoof feel apt, translating twitchy rhythmic ideas, jagged melodic hooks, and a restless sense of momentum that keeps the songs from settling into one shape for too long.
