Topographies compress their coldwave instincts into a tighter, sharper EP

Fact, Friction, and Night Air. On Brutality of Fact, the Bay Area trio make even their most romantic impulses feel braced against steel

The record’s four tracks, “Brutality of Fact,” “Black Rain,” “Love Is Not Enough,” and “Heatwave” reveal a band that knows exactly how much atmosphere to let in before the pulse takes over. Mixed and mastered by Alexis Berthelot, and the Ep display a strong effort in the alternative, dream pop, post-punk, psych, shoegaze, and touching pop spheres.

Built from coldwave rhythms, pulsing bass, and hazy guitar work, the framework of topographies still feels intact here. Leaner and more concentrated than before. With basslines and hooks doing as much emotional work as the reverb does, Brutality of Fact, feels even more deliberate.

For me, the EP’s strength is in how it it lets the tension accumulate until the songs feel like performances with low light, forward motion, and emotional static. This is a sound I would happily return to.
