The Skating Party Perfects Nocturnal Dreampop on Night Ruins

Philadelphia multi-instrumentalist Gregory James crafts an intoxicating 4-track suite of reverb-drenched jangle, motorik grooves, and melancholic romanticism

On Night Ruins, James refines the lush shoegaze textures into a lean, pristine four-track collection that feels tailored for twilight drives. For me, opener "Seventeen Cages" immediately sets the mood, pairing shimmering guitar chimes with driving, motorik rhythms reminiscent of early The Cure and Wild Nothing. James’s vocals drift through dense layers of reverb, providing an ethereal anchor as synth pads swell beneath the mix. The standout moment comes with "Between the Broken," where guest vocalist Estella Rosa adds a haunting, counterbalanced harmony that elevates the track into pure Cocteau Twins-esque euphoria. Meanwhile, "Some Are Wolves" leans into moody post-punk basslines, and closer "She Levels" finishes the release with sprawling, melancholic grace.

What impresses me most about Night Ruins is James’s meticulous self-production. Every rhythmic kick and crystalline guitar hook has room to breathe despite the heavy atmosphere. It's a gorgeous win for The Skating Party!
