RUSSIAN BLUE ARE DONE PLAYING IT SAFE

“The Centrist” pushes Russian Blue's theatrical post-punk into a sharper space, where irony, groove, dance, and self-examination keep colliding

“The Centrist” sits in the world of synthetic post-punk, dance-rock and disco-punk instincts, with enough theatrical movement to stop the groove becoming mechanical. The result feels closer to a small stage production.

The six-piece setup. Multiple keyboards, guitar, bass, percussion and backing vocals give Russian Blue a remarkable amount of room to shift textures, and I can hear that instinct throughout their recurring motifs of LCD Soundsystem and unconventional structures. Russian Blue's arrangements are anything but neutral. The rhythms keep pulling forward, while the theatrical elements give the song an almost satirical sense of motion.

I recommend “The Centrist” to anyone who likes their art-rock with a pulse and their dance music with something to say.
