RL Heyer Finds the Sweet Spot Between Muscle and Melody on Your Sweet Action

A Seattle veteran turns a sprawling cast into a record that still feels tightly authored. I hear progressive-rock patience, blues grit, jazz color, and synth-pop lift working in the same frame

I came away from Your Sweet Action thinking RL Heyer has made a record that understands both scale and discipline. The album arrived in May 2024 as a nine-song, 45-minute release on Sound Records, credited to a loose-limbed Seattle crew featuring Joe Doria, Kathy Moore, Scott Goodwin, Jacques Willis, and Norman Baker, with Heyer producing. What makes it click for me is the way those players let the songs carry the weight. “Enough Is Enough” has the directness of a statement song, “Through Your Eyes” opens the frame without losing its center, “Erase the Day” feels more searching and inward, and “Synchronous Dreams” lands with the record’s warmest, most communal pulse. I also like how the album’s blend of progressive rock, blues, jam, jazz, synthpop, and vocal harmonies never sounds like a checklist. It sounds lived-in, muscular, and unusually human.
