Phil - Home

Phil Woloch is a Vienna-based singer-songwriter and pianist who blends timeless 1970s-style songwriting craftsmanship with a modern pop sound. Inspired by greats like Billy Joel and Elton John as well as contemporary acts, he creates music that feels both classic and fresh. His debut single, “Mind at Ease” (April 2025), introduced him as an artist with a clear identity and a lot of heart. With his new single “Home,” Woloch takes the next step toward a sound that is at once retro and contemporary.

“Home” is a luminous, road-movie-style retro-pop song: synth-led, with a driving bass foundation and a big, hopeful chorus about finding your way back to yourself. The lyric moves from raw confession to resolute confidence—a song that feels both intimate and universal. Whereas “Mind at Ease” celebrated coming of age, “Home” shows a more reflective side—the perfect companion for late-night drives, quiet reflection, and rediscovering your center.

Interview with Phil

What inspired you to write “HOME”?

I’d just got back from the gym with my best mate from uni when a dating app match asked me to write her a song. I laughed, sat at the piano, and sketched the intro on the spot. The idea stuck, and the melody pretty much wrote itself.

How does this song capture the feeling of finding your way back to yourself?

It starts small—almost like a diary entry—then opens up. After a relationship turned toxic, I heard the song through a new lens. The lyric shifted from looking for safety in someone else to choosing myself. Sonically, it’s more dynamic and introspective: space, lift, then a hopeful hit.

What was the moment you knew “HOME” was ready to share with the world?

When its meaning flipped—from searching for “home” in another person to realising the first place it has to live is in me. After a year and a half of turmoil and another year of reflection, it finally felt like a promise I could stand behind.

How do you blend that ‘70s warmth with a modern indie-pop sound?

I love 60s/70s/80s songwriting, and I’m back in love with contemporary pop. I keep the core very pop and easy-listening—voice and piano first—then add harmonic flavour with little twists, and build a modern, synth-forward production with a punchy low end. Classic songcraft, modern sheen.

ree

What emotion do you want people to feel when they hear “HOME”?

Relief and self-respect—the sense that you can turn toward yourself and be okay. It’s a reminder to look after the parts of you that have been carrying the weight.

How did your band help bring this track to life in the studio?

It’s a real group effort. Everything starts with vocals and piano, then the band colours it in. Shout-out to my bass player—he spearheads the demoing, recording, arranging, and mixing. Everyone brings their own ideas and influences, turning a sketch into something that moves.

What’s your favourite lyric from the song?

“You’ve seen me broken, beat up, torn—and started to sew.”

It’s an anchor for me: look out for yourself, trust what you feel, and stitch yourself back together when life pulls at the seams.

How has your sound evolved since “Mind at Ease”?

Mind at Ease leaned into a piano/acoustic palette and a bit of that “Crocodile Rock” energy. HOME steps into a synth/electronic space—fatter beats, more atmosphere, and more dynamic quiet-to-lift moments.

What does “home” mean to you personally?

A testament to yourself. You’re the one constant witness to your life and, in the end, you’re the person who has to show up for you.

How does this single set the tone for your upcoming EP?

It’s the contemplative doorway. The EP balances high-energy, feel-good tracks like “Sometimes a Show” and “Shine Your Light” with darker, electronic atmospheres on “Neon,” plus our first full-on ballad that bridges acoustic and electronic. HOME introduces the quieter spaces that lead into that ballad as the EP’s headliner.
