Interview with Michellar

(º)> What inspired you to create “Truth Over Lies” and focus on societal issues through your music?
With so many affected by the current administration’s opinions and actions … that affect health care , immigration, global and national economy our country is beginning to feel the effects of the lies that the government thinks we as Americans deserve and are subjected to. There are more and more discontent in peoples lives because of the lies the government presents. They further their actions in creating change in many peoples livelihoods. So this sentiment ….inspired this song and we hope to raise the awareness that the people still have power in numbers against the people who run the government . We hope that through music , we can raise our voices and be heard .
(º)> How did your experiences in California and South Africa influence the recording and sound of this track?
The experience in California and South Africa shape the understanding of the message in this song .The message is to sing our cries in unity so that the truth may prevail in the end.
(º)> Can you describe your collaborative process during the making of the single?
Frankie was given the demo vocals and I have describe the collaborative sentiment of the song and its message. With a few descriptive directions , Frankie captured the essence of the message and delivered it with grace and power. Michael Levine and I created the lyrics and Matthias and I collaborated on the music .
With their creative forces … we were able to shape a song that we felt an audience would pay attention to.
(º)> How do you balance delivering a strong message with creating an engaging musical experience?
We worked on the lyrics to make sure that they didnt’ sound reprimanding or demanding in some way.
We decided that the melody would be have a tempo that suits a pulsating urging beat with a soulful energy that uplifts and encourage action. We thought about U2 songs with its beats and haunting melodies and Coldplay’s Engaging delivery and poetic phrasing. With the 2 energies combined , we felt we can have a song that people will gravitate towards and hope for them to listen to.
(º)> What challenges did you face returning to songwriting after a 40-year hiatus?
The challenge when I came back to songwriting is to not run out of material to write about . So far , I haven’t run out of material to write about . I wanted to try and write in as many genre’s as I can to find one I truly like to write in. But I found that I just love songwriting altogether no matter what the genre is. From the start of 2025 till now, I have written 82 songs . I write everyday to keep my mind open. I hope to not stop anytime soon.

(º)> How did the deYoung Museum Open Call Exhibition in 2023 reignite your confidence and creativity?
The exhibit at the deYoung Museum has opened my limitations and boundaries. It was a dream come true . I thought if I can make that dream come true …. Then the sky is the limit as to what I can create through ART.
Music has always been inside me …. I just needed to get right back into it again.
(º)> Which themes or injustices are you most passionate about addressing in your music?
I am passionate about Climate change and I have released 1 song” LOVE EARTH” about that issue. I have written many other songs about it that I have yet to release. Another injustice I feel most passionate about is t“ WAR” . How many people find that it is necessary to engage in to better themselves in the world ,is very disturbing. So I have written several songs about this subject as well.
(º)> How has your sound evolved over the 22 singles you’ve released in the last 9 months?
My sound has become fuller as my productions have taken more intricate collaborations. Within the last 9 months I have learned so much about mixing, producing, mastering and songwriting. The last year has been quite a crash course in the Music Industry and I thank everyone around me who has shown me all the different paths to get to where I am now.
(º)> What emotions or actions do you hope listeners take away from “Truth Over Lies”?
I hope the audience will listen and take actions within their own convictions. That they realize they have power in themselves As a community that power can be enhanced, elevated and magnified … to speak the truths even when there are consequences.
(º)> How do you see Michellar’s musical journey developing in the coming years?
My journey has been quite a rollercoaster and I can see it continuing this way because there are still so many hurdles to jump and connections to fulfill before I can truly say I’ve made it …if I ever do. Time will tell. I am just at the early stages of my music career and I hope to continue with the same fervor and endurance as I have in the past 12 months.
