FISH NIGHT - Bleeding Wires

Bleeding Wires, their most progressive yet when it comes to experimentation with time signatures, layering and unconventional song structuring. Lyrically the track explores themes of emotional scarring and, in a futile manner, trying to break free from it.

FISH NIGHT are an independent psychedelic / progressive / experimental rock band based in the north-west of England. Consisting of four members, they are primarily based in Chester, but each originate from Sunderland, Newcastle, Stoke-on-Trent & Merseyside.

The band is intent on subverting musical expectations with a unique brand of experimental music. Heavy riffs, anthemic synths, and psychedelic outros full of suspense aim to captivate the audience and create a thought-provoking experience.

Interview with FISH NIGHT

Bleeding Wires is described as your most progressive and experimental track yet. What pushed you to explore unconventional time signatures and song structures on this release?

To be honest, it happened by accident! We jumped in the practice room with the riff/idea and then it spiraled into something weird and wonderful! We like to be unpredictable, and it’s something our listeners often point out that they enjoy, being taken on this wild unhinged journey but enjoying every step of it!

The lyrics deal with emotional scarring and attempts to break free. How do personal experiences influence your songwriting?

I think with music like this, you can really dive into and convey a plethora of emotions as the music takes unexpected twists as turns, it’s quite reflective of how life can be. It’s an amazing conduit to get shit off your chest.

The single’s release coincides with your headline show at Telfords Warehouse. How are you preparing for a show that will showcase your entire catalogue?

Ah man the show (26/09) was an absolute RIOT! Yeah we really went hard on that one, we tried to consider things outside the box to make the show not hit another show but an experience, Jamie made an intro track for the start of the show which was an amalgamation of vocal parts from our first three singles warped into a reverb/delay centric anthem, it was really cool to walk out to. We also chucked out these massive daft foil fish balloons into the crowd during one of our newer songs ‘Reef City’, that really injected an aquatic whimsical flourish to the night!

Fish Night combines psychedelic, progressive, and experimental rock. How do you balance these elements to create your signature sound?

How do we balance them? We don’t! We typically let the songwriting ebb and flow between these elements, some may be on the heavier more serious side and some might have a laid back jovial approach! It’s all part of what makes us, us!

Heavy riffs, anthemic synths, and suspenseful psychedelic outros are key to your style. How do you decide which elements to emphasize in a track?

Similarly to the last question, we don’t really decide as such, I think we just know when a track feels more synth centric or needs to be built around a riff or a hook that drives the tune. It’s always fun weaving between the elements though , it adds to the journey that we’re trying to take people on!

Being based in Chester but with members from Sunderland, Newcastle, Stoke-on-Trent, and Merseyside, how do your varied backgrounds influence the band’s creative process?

That’s a good question! It’s definitely an eclectically unhinged cocktail of influences. For example I’d say the heaviest side of it comes more from myself, having grown up with Metallica, Sabbath & Maiden etc. Contrastingly you’ve got Aaron who presents a more flamboyant charismatic background of artists like David Bowie so it all really lends itself to the unpredictability of the songwriting!

Experimentation seems central to your music. Can you describe a moment in the studio where a creative risk really paid off?

haha I think 90% of our time in the studio is a creative risk. It’s our favourite place to be when it comes to bringing the music to life. A track we’ve just recorded recently saw Aaron unexpectedly burst into rap during the heavy breakdown of the track, we had no idea it was coming but as soon as we heard it we were like “yep, it’s in.”

What inspires you to subvert musical expectations and challenge traditional song structures?

To put it as straight forward as possible, the unwavering desire to not be dull. Imagine hearing a chorus of a song for example and you’re like “man that absolutely slapped, can’t wait to hear that when it comes back around but then it never repeats in the track, you’re like “well shit they got me there”. THAT’S IT, we’ve got songs that are chorusless, have one or two verses that sound completely different and like 3 bridges. I dunno; we just don’t structure - maybe it’s a reflection on our personalities haha!

How do you hope audiences will experience Bleeding Wires live compared to the recorded version?

oh man to be honest, I prefer it live. Aaron plays the into slow and really rings out the Arabic-esque melody of the guitar before holding on at the end before bringing the riff in, it really changes the dynamic of the song. I think take the suspenseful elements of the recorded version of the track and double down on it live, just to playfully mess with the audience and bring them out of their comfort zones!

Looking ahead, where do you see Fish Night’s sound evolving over the next year or two?

I have absolutely no idea but I’m down for the ride and look forward to seeing how it evolves ! I think we might even hone in on a few EPs that are more focused on one element of our sound, so we can really let our listeners dive into every bit of what makes Fish Night, Fish Night!
