Interview with Erotika Dabra

Your 2025 mashup reflects a journey from darkness to self-love while keeping the music danceable. How did you approach translating such personal experiences into sound?
To reacquaint myself with the uniqueness of each track I broke each down into their basic elements and dumped them into an Ableton file together. It was a really humbling and grounding experience to have all the elements of each song in front of me and to be able to intentionally weave them together into something new. It was therapy for me, I could hold acknowledge the presence of the darkness while finding its resonance amongst the chaos of the year's magic.
How has exploring themes of domestic violence and recovery shaped your creative process this year?
I have been an emo for around 20 years now, so my music has become a way to dance with my inner demons. Seeing my DV journey as a part of the broader me, the continuum of journeying through time, allows me to bring authenticity to my experience while being empowered to choose its context. I wrote the I Wonder tracks to cleanse the rot that had been eating away at me and start to shift it back onto the 'You' who gave me the trauma. Since then, my art has simultaneously lent more into the grunge vibes (EAT ME/DRINK ME) while becoming more vibrant and playful (my latest two including my 2025 mashup).
Your music is described as experimental electronic, often blending performance art like pole dancing. How do these two forms inform and inspire each other?
I am an electronic hedge with producer who vibes and intuits their way through. As I pole dance live to my music, I have created a feedback loop for myself over the last couple of years of learning how my music feels to dance to relative to how I intended it to the point where I create my music with the intention of future moments in a performance. This now encourages me to seek the joy and find that rhythm within me that has kept me going <3
Can you walk us through the moment you realized music could help you “set your demons free”?
My first track 'Flood of White' takes you on a PTSD attack, where your physicality drives your mentality, and you come in and out of lucidity. When I played that track. without context, to a friend, and their immediate response was to open up about shared trauma, I knew that I had found a way to circumvent the gag my demons had put on me that prevented me from speaking directly. I have since nurtured this power and my voice comes to me increasingly easier.
How do you balance creating emotionally raw music with the desire to make people move and dance?
It has taken me learning to be appreciative of the acts that gave me my neurological disorder for me to be able to see myself as a traveler in time that is constantly evolving. Things that once felt like they would overwhelm every part of me now sit on my shoulder, trying their best to remain relevant, but now juxtaposed against the magical me that I get to be.
What role does experimentation play in your sound, and how do you know when a track is complete?
Experimentation is my entire process I adore it! It mirrors my preferred type of play which is creation (massive gamer too), working with sounds, samples, conventions and expectations, it makes my brain happy. I want to hold the duality of having a signature vibe, without ever sticking to the restrictions of one genre or sound.
Your work has been called multi-dimensional. How do you hope listeners experience the layers you create in your music?
Even if you're not a dancer, try and let yourself feel where in your body the music takes you. Some of my songs make me want to close my eyes and spin around the pole with full momentum, others make me want to hair flick at 180bpm (and potentially rend my head clean off).
How did 2025’s personal challenges influence your artistic vision moving forward?
It made me want to not let fear ever be a determining factor in my art or life.
For those unfamiliar with your music, how would you describe the journey of listening to one of your tracks?
Like dancing through a guided tour of your brain, you'll be sightseeing through some weird and magical places and coming out with some cool new memories of falling in love with yourself.
What future projects or themes are you excited to explore in your music and performances?
I have only recently been able to make music beyond the darkness, that straddles all of me and can make me want to wear a black lip while also knowing and projecting my power. I have been working on my 2026 calendar of performances and events, which will build on my 2025 list including 2nd Hand(s) on my Body (celebrating 2nd hand, self-made,, and repurposed clothing raising money for a women's crisis centre) and Clean Up but Make it Dirty (cleaning up parkland in pole outfits to raise awareness). These are all parts of me that reflect my values and journey, so creating music that speaks to these parts of me will be an empowering journey <3
