🐦 What inspired you to write Dance Fire, and what story does it tell?

🌺I’m half Filipino so music and dance were very much woven into the fabric of my upbringing. I was surrounded by really talented dancers and my friends had formed their own dance crews. When we were old enough, we were introduced to Hip Hop and R&B clubs. I love seeing people on the dance floor showing off their best moves. Dance Fire comes from this lived experience and celebrates a passion for dance, the rhythm and love on the dance floor. Another main theme in Dance Fire is feminine confidence. The confidence to ask a potential love interest for more. Asking them to step up to the challenge and prove they have what it takes to be with you.

🐦How did working with Jhay C shape the sound and energy of the track?

🌺Working on Dance Fire with Jhay C was so much fun! I often come to the studio with an already written song but we wanted to create something from scratch. So we simply booked the recording studio, walked in and began jamming. Like any good jam session - when you start vibing the magic happens. Jhay C also has a shared love for dance, he used to be a Hip Hop dancer before he became a music producer - and he still has the moves! While we were working on the song he started busting out some dance moves. My choreographer, James Deane, was also there at the studio. The song was only half finished when they both started grooving to it. I really wish I’d filmed them dancing but we were too busy enjoying the moment which in itself was really special. In a day and age where we often pull out our phones to film, I think we forget to experience the moment. It’s so important to just live and not always be trying to capture something for the gram.

🐦 What was it like collaborating with James Deane on the music video choreography and direction?

🌺 Working with James Deane on this music video was amazing! We had a blast! For the choreography and film direction I wanted to capture the essence of this song in visual form: dance, passion, flirtation and love on the dance floor. I was really blessed to have James Deane’s film and dance skill, knowledge and insight on this project. He was able to take my vision and bring it to life! He also brought onboard a really talented DP and Videographer, Chris Harrison, to help create our film sets. From smoke filled rooms and building scaffolding - we got out the tools and worked together to make the music video possible. I wanted to also celebrate the beauty of feminine confidence so he workshopped a choreography piece for me to perform with two female dancers. It was really fun working with him and the dancers. The energy on set was so positive. Everyone kept cheering each other on which was beautiful and uplifting.

🐦 How do you blend your vocal style with the upbeat, danceable RnB sound?

🌺 I have loved Pop-RnB since I was a kid. Especially the big vocal ballads. For Dance Fire I wanted something upbeat, fun and danceable but I also wanted to weave in some big vocal lines. Towards the climax of the song was a perfect spot to add dynamic vocal moments.

🐦 What emotions or energy do you want listeners to feel on the dance floor?

🌺 I want listeners to have a great time on the dance floor and to feel the confidence to let loose and have fun!

🐦 How has your multicultural background influenced your music and artistic perspective?

🌺 Living in Australia with my multicultural background hugely impacted my upbringing and artistic development. The Filipino community in Australia hold events and provide safe spaces for the youth to perform. Filipinos love music and dance. At parties there is always music and someone performing live. You’re encouraged to get up and dance. All ages participate from young children all the way to our Lolas and Lolos (grandmas and grandpas). Growing up in a local community that celebrates the arts and fully embraces the joy of self expression gave me a safe space to practice and develop my music and performance skills.

🐦 Can you talk about your journey from performing internationally to building your Byron Bay studio?

🌺 I love performing in Australia. With our laid back culture, Aussies really know how to good time! I also love performing overseas. It is a great privilege to travel to another country, meet the locals and experience their culture, while doing something you love. I have performed in some wonderful places including the Solomon Islands, the Philippines and most recently Vietnam! That’s the beauty of music - it really does unite people in the moment. I built my recording studio in Byron Bay, so I could be close to family while still doing what I love. I used my personal saving to build the recording studio and I’m so glad I did it! It took time, research and I had to learn how to use power tools to build everything - now I have some new useful skills! This recording studio is now my creative sanctuary where I write, record and produce. I can try out music concepts and if I get a song idea at 3AM I can hop into my studio and lay it down while the idea is fresh in my mind.

🐦 How do your collaborations with artists from around the world inform your songwriting process?

🌺 I always want to make music that all parties involved are proud of and feels true to us as artists. Before we start writing, I like to chat with my collaborator to see what they are vibing and find a theme that we both resonate with. Then we can work out what music skills we want to bring to the project and how we can best compliment each other. I love collaborations because I always learn something new during the process.

🐦 What was the most challenging part of producing Dance Fire?

🌺 Once we hit the studio, Dance Fire actually happened really quickly because the mood in the room was so right! It’s always a challenge finding a time that works for everyone to be in the same room but once we got into the studio we just vibed! When the mood is right the creative juices start flowing and that’s when magical things happen!

🐦 How do you see Dance Fire fitting into your overall artistic evolution and upcoming projects?

🌺 I can see Dance Fire being a dynamic part of my live performances. I’m excited to work with my choreographer, James Deane, to incorporate Dance Fire into my live show and I can’t wait to see the audience dancing to it. It’s such a fun track. I really hope people embrace Dance Fire, add it to their playlists and just let loose whether they are in their bedroom, in a dance class or out on the dance floor!
