Interview with To1Swerve

What personal experiences inspired the themes of growth, resilience, and vision on Shooting Star?
Shooting Star came from a place of transition — mentally, spiritually, and musically. I’ve been through seasons of setbacks, betrayal, and rebuilding myself. But every time I fell, I came back sharper. This project represents that — the idea that even when you’re falling through darkness, you can still shine. The growth and resilience come from real life, from standing on faith and learning to trust the process rather than rush it.
How do your UK roots and Caribbean background shape your sound and storytelling?
My sound is a mix of everything that raised me. The UK gave me that rawness — grime, rap, street perspective — while my Caribbean side brings rhythm, warmth, and a deeper spiritual undertone. That mix gives my music duality: tough but soulful, street but conscious. It’s like I’m merging two worlds every time I record.
Can you share the meaning behind the mixtape title Shooting Star?
A shooting star burns bright but fast — it’s rare, powerful, and unforgettable. For me, it symbolizes those who rise from struggle, even if the odds are stacked against them. I called it Shooting Star because I’m no longer running from my light — I’m embracing it fully.

Which track on the mixtape best represents your evolution as an artist?
“Rain Down.” That record shows the balance between pain and power — it’s melodic, introspective, but still heavy. It’s where I found my tone as an artist — no longer just rapping to prove a point, but rapping with purpose and control.
How do you balance hard-hitting rap with melodic flow to convey emotion effectively?
It’s all about intention. I approach verses like therapy — I want the bars to hit, but I also want people to feel me. I use melody to carry emotion and lyrics to tell truth. When those two connect, it becomes timeless rather than trendy.
How have experiences with loyalty, betrayal, and fatherhood influenced your writing?
They made me realer. Loyalty and betrayal taught me not everyone moves with the same heart. Fatherhood gave me vision — I’m not just living for myself anymore. Every lyric I write now carries legacy energy. I’m showing my kids what perseverance and faith look like in real time.

What role does spirituality and self-discovery play in your music?
It’s the core. I’ve faced spiritual battles that shaped who I am today. My music is how I process that — how I turn warfare into wisdom. I always involve God in my process, because without that connection, none of this means anything.
How did the success of singles like “33rd Degree” influence your approach to Shooting Star?
“33rd Degree” showed me that people connect more when I’m raw and intentional. That single opened doors and gave me confidence to lean into my truth more. It made me realize my sound doesn’t have to fit trends — it just needs to be real.
How do you define your identity as an artist, and what does the name To1Swerve signify in your journey?
To1Swerve represents evolution. It’s about swerving through obstacles while staying true to yourself. I’ve gone through names and phases, but To1Swerve is the version of me that’s fully aligned — purpose-driven, focused, and spiritually aware.
What legacy are you aiming to build, both musically and personally, with this mixtape?
I’m building a legacy of truth, transformation, and impact. Musically, I want Shooting Star to show people that real rap and soul still matter. Personally, I want my story to remind people that even when life knocks you down, you can rise with grace, faith, and power — and still shine.
