There is a rare joy in watching a band whose very name promises a lack of amusement completely turn the tables on their listeners. For me, that delightful subversion arrived with NOFUN’s latest single, "Murphy and the Pool."

Having tracked their previous releases through dark rooms and guitar-heavy garage rock structures, I’ve always appreciated their gritty urgency. But Murphy and the Pool marks a massive, sun-bleached leap forward. From the very first measure, the track envelops you in a hazy, nostalgic warmth that channels the classic jangle-pop of REM filtered through a modern, driving garage-rock lens.

The production here is beautifully open and dynamic. A crisp, bouncing drum line provides a brilliant contrast to a wave of shimmering, bright guitar chords that sound like they were recorded directly at the edge of a concrete deep end.
