Mind Frog Turn “Night Owl” Into a Strange Little Triumph

The Brighton band’s country-blues-psych hybrid sounds looser and funnier. “Night Owl” “Slaughterhouse Jive,” “Desperado,” and “Goodbye,” promising a seductive, heady brew of country, blues, and psych rock.

I’ve spent time with “Night Owl,” and what grabs me is how confidently Mind Frog let the song stay unruly. The Brighton group usually diplays a fusion of country, blues, and psych rock, but the single feels like a party trick that actually works. A Blur-esque guitar lick, organ keys that inject mischief, and a rhythmic pull that keeps the whole thing moving with a grin.

For me, the best thing about Mind Frog is that they never sound boxed in by the references they’re clearly enjoying. Sprawling and unpredictable, veering from psychedelic drift to western swagger to stomp-along momentum, and “Night Owl” captures that range in miniature. At just 3:23, it is compact, and still leaves room for handmade grit and infectious swing.
