I’ve spent time with Mason Stephenson’s six singles, “a feather,” “Breathe,” “Dimanche Soir,” “Feel,” “Rain Song,” and “Tranquil”. And what strikes me is how consistently he treats restraint as drama. Stephenson is as a pianist and composer from Manchester finding peace in melancholic music and his works couldn't be more romantic and classical, with a melancholy, peaceful sound.

The shorter tracks feel like polished sketches where the emotion arrivesd all at once, while “Feel” and “Tranquil” open out with more breathing room, letting the heavy feelings accumulate. I hear Chopin as an influence the way he shapes melody as something intimate and unresolved, while his admiration for romantic piano writing gives the music its inward glow. Stephenson knows that a simple figure, repeated with conviction, can carry more weight than a grand gesture ever could.
