Into Twelve Find a Cleaner Edge on “Burgeon Blue”

I went into “Burgeon Blue” with a clear sense of Into Twelve’s lane. DIY indie rock, for the ones who want to be rebel. The song feels tight, immediate, and emotionally alert, like it is constantly weighing motion against restraint. In the push-pull between forward drive and something more haunted underneath is when the song is at its very best.

Into Twelve’s reference points link to Pixies, Guided by Voices, Fugazi, Arcade Fire, Pavement, Joy Division, Yo La Tengo, Hot Chip, and Fontaines D.C., and I can hear that mix of scruff, urgency, and melodic intent in the track’s DNA.  The result is a single that feels like a victory lap and a tightening of the screws, at the same time. That focus gives “Burgeon Blue” its real charge.
