INTERVIEW: ROMAIN GUTSY

1. Cru Cru Romain Gutsy, super nice to have the chance to chat with you! What first got you into music?

The answer is… Music got me into music. But maybe something more esoteric is at work here. When 4 years old, I was passing regularly with my mother by a music shop where there was an electric guitar in the showcase. I was completely, immensely attracted by this guitar and could not help but asking my mother to buy it for me. She never did. Then, frustrated, I asked her to be able to learn violin. She said that it would be too horrible for our neighbors (we lived in a flat), because for at least one years I would play so bad that it would be unbearable. Then I asked her for trumpet lessons. Same answer, but then because trumpet is too noisy. Finally, after harsh negotiation, at 6 I could start taking classical piano lessons. I guess I started to be in music that day.

2. What’s your favorite movie?

Can I have two? With close titles? Life is Beautiful from Roberto Benigni and It’s a Wonderful life from Frank Capra.

3. What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

Out of order: Human rights advocate, lawyer, workman, barman, writer (books), marketing manager, painter (artist), translator, what else?

4. What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

Keep faith and confidence despite pushbacks and sometimes bad critics. It’s an activity that requests to be in a good mental shape to be creative and positive in your creation, and at the same time, you put so much of yourself in it that critics of your creations can be felt as a depreciation of your inner self, of your core being. Then it requests to be able to keep your moral whatever happens, and to differentiate between you and your creation.

5.What are your favorite instruments?

Acoustic guitar comes first. Then Diatonic accordion, but for some times now, I lack practice of it. Banjo is also in the list.

6. What’s your favorite song?

It changes so often. Right now, it’s Blue Raincoat from Leonard Cohen. Last week it was Zombie from Fela Kuti.

7. What’s your favorite 70’s artist?

Cat Stevens. Maybe tomorrow I change my mind…

8. What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next 5 to 10 years?

A lot of success with Romain Gutsy’s production. International fan base, many concerts in good locations, and a lot of songs that people know and sing at a large scale. Said differently: a great reach of my music to a big number (millions) of people. And my accomplishment with this is to contribute uplifting people.

9. Are you a music fan?

Music is not separable from my life. So yes, I’m a fan, but even more.

10. Do You agree with the Pigeon?

That’s an interesting question. I would like to say no, because I’m a rebel. But the truth is that I don’t find any good reason to disagree. That’s a tricky question. Maybe the most important of all. And the answer is yes, unfortunately.
