INTERVIEW: DIVINING ROD

Cru Cru Miyuki from Divining Rod, super nice to have the chance to chat with you!

  1. How did you get into music?

I was surrounded by music early on while growing up in Hawaii. My uncles, aunts and cousins played at every family get together. I heard lots of traditional Hawaiian music, as well as country music. I became obsessed with making my own music in middle school, recording songs on 4 track recorders in my bedroom. I moved to Baltimore for university and became more of a full time musician- touring and making records. Then i moved to Brooklyn and got signed to Too Pure Records and started making much more records. Now I make records as Divining Rod.

2. Can you tell us a nostalgic memory of yours?

I’m more of a "Now-ist" so I tend to live in the moment. However, a recent thing I did recently was run a marathon.

3. What’s your favorite color?

Pink

4 Will you tell us something embarassing about you?

I’m not really embarrassed by anything. For instance, I love California Gurls by Katy Perry but I ain’t embarrassed about it.

5. What’s the mid decade for music?

There’s been tons of great music in every decade. That being said, there’s a lot of crap as well. But that’s subjective.

6. What’s your favorite 2020’s album?

I love too many. But here are 5 records from 21/22 that I like:

Dehd - Blue Skies

Hiss Golden Messenger - Quietly Blowing It

Turnstile - Glow On

The Smile - A Light For Attracting Attention

SG Goodman - Teeth Marks

7.What’s the best experience you ever had while playing music?

I was lucky enough to play the Primavera Festival in Barcelona. That was pretty dang amazing.

8. What music means to you?

All music means everything to me.

9. Why the name divining rod?

My friend, Arika Casebolt, thought of that name for a short lived band a long time ago. I started going under that moniker when I started my solo project. I guess it stuck with me. I like the idea of the dowsing rod (aka divining rod). It could either be a divine instrument used to find water OR a complete con. I like that dichotomy.

10. Do You agree with the Pigeon?

That depends. What’s the Pigeon preaching?

The Pigeon added the new single to his Weekly Gems playlist on Spotify.
