“Cereal Killer” pushes ILLANTHROPY deeper into leftfield territory, pairing Phat Dallas with a heavier and more experimental strain of bass music.

Narrowing the gap between heavyweight dubstep and genuinely strange electronic production. “Cereal Killer,” a 3:35 collaboration with Phat Dallas released April 28, arrives after “BASSiCK” and “Goose Patrol,” .

The project is leaning harder into leftfield bass keeping the physical impact that defines Stephen Blasy’s work. Experimental bass, leftfield bass, dubstep, halftime and even heavy metal is a pretty accurate description of the territory ILLANTHROPY has spent years exploring.

The collision of menace and playfulness. “Cereal Killer" sounds deliberately cartoonish! Interoception showed how effectively ILLANTHROPY can move from melodic bass into wonky, grimier passages, while earlier collaborations with Smoakland and Ravenscoon established a knack for making dense low-end feel expansive.

ILLANTHROPY has built a run of collaborations that suggests a more collaborative and increasingly hybrid phase. “Cereal Killer” feels like another step toward a harder and stranger edge.

Interview with illanthropy

(•)> What was the first idea that became “Cereal Killer,” and how did Phat Dallas become involved?

(•)> Where did the title “Cereal Killer” come from, and how deliberately did you lean into the absurdity of that phrase?

(•)> Bandcamp tags the track as experimental bass, leftfield bass, dubstep and halftime. Which of those descriptions feels closest to what you were actually trying to achieve?

(•)> The track also carries a “heavy metal” tag. Was that heaviness a conscious influence on the sound design?

(•)> How did you and Phat Dallas divide the creative process between sound design, arrangement and the final production decisions?

(•)> Did “Cereal Killer” begin as a fully formed ILLANTHROPY track before the collaboration, or was the record built collaboratively from the outset?

(•)> Your 2024 album Interoception moved between melodic bass, wonky textures and much darker low-end passages. What did that album teach you that directly fed into this single?

(•)> “Cereal Killer” follows “BASSiCK” and “Goose Patrol,” both collaborations with Phat Dallas. What made this particular three-release run feel worth pursuing as a sequence?

(•)> How has your approach to bass design changed since Find Your Mind, especially in terms of giving extremely heavy sounds enough space to breathe?

(•)> You’ve collaborated with artists including Smoakland and Ravenscoon. What does working with another producer bring out of ILLANTHROPY that you might not discover working alone?

(•)> How important is humor, absurdity or surreal imagery to your production style when the underlying music is this physically intense?

(•)> Looking at “Cereal Killer” alongside the rest of your 2026 material, what does this period reveal about the direction ILLANTHROPY is moving toward?

(•)> That's all, Folks! Check out Illanthropy on the Pigeon Opinion Playlist
