On Flashbulb Memories, The Suede Grenades already sound like a group with a fully sharpened identity. The record’s 12-song, 44-minute runtime gives it enough room to breathe. The sequencing moves from the clipped momentum of “Sane” into the push-pull tension of “Here It Comes Again,” then through the glassy angles of “Snapshot,” “Crooked Mirror,” and “Retrograde.” I hear the band’s stated influences. Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, Cage The Elephant. Leaning into bruised vocals, muscular bass, and riffs that land with purpose and excess. Indie rock, grunge, and blues fits, yet what matters more is the band’s control. Even the more restless cuts like “Uncertain Days” and “When It’s Over” feel arranged with real discipline. By the time “Smash” arrives, the album has earned its dreamy and surreal title.
