Interview
1. Hey Yardij, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. First and foremost what got you into music?
We started playing music as a band in highschool (typical local band backstory!) Deja was already involved with a production label and was being managed by Cheryl Steele (Shndō & Nitti) and Randy Acker (Def Jam) at the time, and we'd just get together everyday after school to play music. We decided after a few jam sessions that this would be fun to do together, so we made a pact and have been doing it ever since.
2. What’s your favorite female artist?
This question is bonkers - there's so many! I'm going to shout out a few female artists and female fronted bands that we love:
Tori Amos
Paramore
Pool Kids
The Haunt
Woolbright
SoulPax
3. Can you write what was your best performance in your career? How do you remember it?
Hands down is between opening for BonJovi and playing Okeechobee Music Festival. Opening for BonJovi meant our first stadium show. Hearing us plug in and play a venue so big was surreal. Okeechobee was awesome too. We had such an early slot, and we expected the crowd to be tiny because it was our first year playing Okee but we didn't care. We were just stoked to be there. When we came out we were surprised to see as many people as we did. We were going to give it our all regardless, but it was fun getting down with that crowd.
4. What memorable responses have you had to "Your Move"?
The song is set to release on the 15th of September, but we've had this song in the works for a few years. We played it a show in NYC a few years back and some kid broke his ankle while jumping and dancing during the third chorus. He came up to us and told us after the show with his foot pointing in a direction it shouldn't. I guess that's when we knew this was kind of a banger.
5. Who came first? The chicken or the Egg?
The pigeon. Final answer.
6. What would you do if you had a time machine?
I broke my toe on Monday - so I guess I'd go back in time and tell myself to watch out for that wall that came out of nowhere.
7. Do you think that technology is improving lives?
Yes. Absolutely.
8. What’s your favorite album from the alternative rock scene?
Room On Fire by The Strokes changed my life!
9. Do you agree with the Pigeon?
The Pigeon and I go back all the way to middle school. We're close friends and The Pigeon will be the godparent of my child. Yes, I agree with the Pigeon.
Review
"Your Move" wins me over immediately with an infectious rhythm pattern that establishes an exceptional synergy with atmospheric synthesizers. Eventually, Yardij's dreamy voice gently enters the song until it becomes an epic with powerful vocal performances and alternative guitar lines. "Your Move" slows down again with skillful and delicate chords - as you can see it's a sensual single that works by contrasts and executes them very well, speeding up and slowing down with incredible ease in a space where the lights are off.
The Pigeon added the new single to his Weekly Gems playlist on Spotify. You can check out the released music below. If you like what you hear, make sure to follow along so you can stay on top of future releases!
