1. Hey Yana, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?
Music has been an important part of my life as long as I can remember. I have always been into lyrics. However, I never had that dream of becoming a musician. But sometimes, fate intervenes and changes the course of our lives and we realize after a while that everything happens for a reason.
2. What is the first thing you think of when you wake up?
It depends on the day, what is going on around me at that time. Before anything gets underway, my day needs to start with a coffee or tea.
3. What do you dislike about the art world?
The thought of music being free. People outside music have no idea how expensive it is to record and release music. You pay the hairdresser when you have your hair done so why aren’t people willing to adequately pay the music creators so they can create more art?
4. What are you focusing on right now?
I am working on my debut album and the process has been dreamy, I managed to work with some of my heroes and it has been a wonderful learning curve. Cannot wait for you to hear the result!
5. How do you balance your time in the studio with other commitments such as a part-time job, family, admin?
The older you get the tougher it gets to balance everything. But if you are a true artist, you will be making art all your life because it is who you are, not just what you do. I happen to be the most creative late at night when there are no distractions from the outside world.
6. What is the biggest mistake you have made within your career to this point?
I don’t wanna sound arrogant or anything but I honestly cannot think of any mistake made. However,
Glen Hansard once told me that even the bad decisions are part of how you grow as an artist, part of the journey.
7. What’s your favorite TV show?
Midsomer Murders, Dexter. I recently discovered the series Balthasar and the lead character intrigued me. Worth checking out!
8. What’s your favorite movie?
There are too many too mention. For example Angels and demons, Begin Again, The Devil’s Advocate.
9. What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
I taught private English lessons for a while, did a few jobs as a translator and I am music journalist now and love it. Music never really leaves me.
10. What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?
Not only getting your art, in this case music, to the right ears but most importantly dealing with rejection, often coming from those closest to you. You shouldn’t get discouraged by the non-sayers because they are always going to be there and also, you are not making your art for them. You are doing it for yourself in the first place.
