Interview
Cru cru The Ruby Tears, what first got you into music?
Jeff: When I was a kid, my sister played The Kinks, The Stones and The Beatles, My brother played Ska and Motown, my dad played Frank Sinatra and then I heard Slade and Bowie and I had something of my own.
What memorable responses have you had to your release: "Learn To Fly" so far?
A couple of people have commented that the song has made them feel better about what they were going through at the time. I dont think any review could match that in terms of a positive response.
If you could gain any superpower, which one would you choose to acquire? Fly?
No, not to Fly, you really need to Learn to Fly. If a super power could be bestowed upon me I guess I’d go for teleportation which is just fast flying really without the jetlag.
Name your top 3 indie rock tunes to listen to
No One Knows - QOTSA, Gardenia - Iggy Pop, The Strokes - Reptilia
What would you do if you had a time machine?
Go and buy a 1961 telecaster in 1961 and give my little baby self a hug.
Do you think that technology is improving lives?
Of course it is but it is human innovation which creates the technology not the other way around. Technology must meet a human need and the way that people meet those needs changes with time. The very definition of technology has changed in the last 100 years. Unfortunately, even positive technology can affect the planet negatively so there is always a balance which needs to be addressed.
What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?
Just to keep on writing and trying new ideas even if they don’t always seem be the right thing at first.
Can you write what was your best performance in your career? How do you remember it?
For me it was with my previous band which only existed for one gig. It was the catalyst for all that followed though.
What are your favorite post - punk albums of all time?
Magazine - Real Life
Killing Joke - Killing Joke
Simple Minds - Sons and Fascination
Do you agree with the pigeon?
Only in that we all need to learn to fly, any animal that exists on a diet of human sick and curry and chips shouldn’t be entirely trusted. 😉
Review
"Learn To Fly" was born on the day yesterday arrived and enchants our ears with delicate chords while the sky is falling! The synergy between the percussion and the keys is amazing, especially in the bridge supported by slightly heavier strings. Melodically, it's still very interesting and stimulating, bringing us the glow of the stars through sparkling electronic details. Later, it sends us into space with the virtuosity of electric guitars, a bridge that I can only compare to the iconic guitar duel that takes place in the Eagles' most iconic song. In short, "Learn To Fly" takes care of our mental health by encouraging us to acquire more emotional intelligence so that we can better deal with our emotions, especially when the stars don't shine on us.
