ARTIST INTERVIEW: SONOMANCER

Sonomancer - Dreamsc

1. Cru cru, what first got you into music?

I got to try out Music Creation for the Playstation. I remember putting together a melody and harmony that gave me goosebumps. I was hooked and never looked back.

2. What or who is your inspiration to create music?

Quite a few bands and artists - Future Sound of London, Orbital, Boards of Canada, The Avalanches... I'm inspired by anyone I vibe with, including more recent acts like Madeon, but I think the biggest influence is The Prodigy. It broke my heart when Keith Flint died a few years ago.

3. What's your most controverisal music opinion?

Permission to speak freely? The Internet killed the music industry. It got obliterated. There are some good things about that - it's easier to get into now, as a fan you have access to pretty much everything, and some of the really nasty elements about the industry are now getting long overdue punishment. Just look at all the crap that came out about P Diddy, R Kelly and God knows who else... but it's not all good news. Wanna make a living out of music when the concept of paying it is now completely alien? Yeah - good luck with that. Took me a while to put that out of my mind and just get on with it. I do it because I love it. That is all.

4. Will you tell us something embarassing about you?

Yeah, nah. Hahaha!

5. How is your perfect day?

Blue skies, sunshine and putting the finished touches to a track I'm really happy with at my secret lab in the sky.

6. What memorable responses have you had to your work so far?

Whenever someone has really liked what I do. That really means so much to me. Digital Graves struck a real chord with some people. When I came out with the new video for Dreamscapes this year, I had a lot of excited responses around it lifting the track and being a new form of expression. That inspires me too - we now have some great new tools at our disposal as musicians, and I've often thought that technology has been one of the greatest drivers for pushing music forward.

7. Do you see yourself as a music nerd?

Not really - I know a lot about certain bands, genres or tech, but that's about it.

8. What album do you replay the most?

Damn... this made me think of something. I hardly listen to albums these days at all. So technically my answer my never ending playlist on Spotify. I have just one playlist that I add all the tracks to and then leave it on shuffle - think I'm up to 1,800 now! I did finally get around to listening to Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd recently. That's a phenomenal album, and in some ways still scarily relevant even though it's over fifty years old now. Makes me worried about if we're really progressing as a society or if we've plateaued. Some times I worry that we are going backwards in some ways, or at least in circles.

9. What's your favorite movie?

Probably still Fight Club. There are a lot of contenders. I should probably watch it again and see if it's still my favourite!

10. Do you agree with the Pigeon?

Most of the time!
