ARTIST INTERVIEW: SOLEIL RIVER NATION

Soleil River Nation - Consumerist Dream

1. What first got you into music?

Honestly, music has always been a part of my life. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember—my family says I was singing before I could even talk! Being half-Filipina, music is in my blood; it’s such a big part of our culture.

During the pandemic, when I was 7, I was stuck at home and needed something to do, so I started playing the piano. I instantly fell in love with it, and that’s when everything clicked for me. From there, I kept exploring—I picked up the trumpet, guitar, and even joined singing programs. Music just feels like the perfect way to express everything I feel and see in the world. It’s my favorite way to tell stories.

2. What or who is your inspiration to create music?

My biggest inspiration comes from the world around me—everything I see, hear, and feel. I’m always watching people, taking notes, and turning their stories and emotions into lyrics. Life is full of inspiration if you’re paying attention!

I also look up to amazing artists like Ariana Grande and Sia for their unique voices and boldness. But my greatest inspiration is my mom. She’s such a strong, incredible person who believes in me and works so hard to make my dreams come true. She inspires me to create music that’s honest and meaningful, and I hope my songs can inspire others in the same way.

3. What's your most controversial music opinion?

Hmm, I’d say my most controversial music opinion is that simplicity can be way more powerful than overcomplicating things. Sometimes, the most memorable songs are the ones with just a few chords and heartfelt lyrics. You don’t always need big production or fancy effects to make a song stand out—it’s the emotion and honesty that really connect with people.

Oh, and I think music doesn’t need to fit into just one genre! Mixing styles and experimenting can create the coolest, most unique songs. Why stick to one box when there’s a whole world of sound to explore?

4. Will you tell us something embarrassing about you?

Okay, here it goes—I’ve called my teacher “Mama” at least a couple of times! It’s so embarrassing, but honestly, she’s just so warm and caring, kind of like my mom, but in a school setting. I guess it just slips out sometimes! Everyone laughs, including me, but yeah, it’s a little awkward!

5. How is your perfect day?

My perfect day would start with a big breakfast—pancakes, eggs, and hot chocolate, of course! Then I’d spend the morning playing music, maybe writing a new song or practicing piano or guitar.

In the afternoon, I’d hang out with my friends or family, maybe go to the beach or just relax outside somewhere nice. After that, I’d have time to paint or work on some creative project—it’s so fun to express myself in different ways.

To end the day, I’d perform live or just sing and play music with people I care about. Oh, and there has to be ice cream at some point. That would be the absolute best day ever!

6. What memorable responses have you had to your work so far?

There have been so many moments that made me feel really proud and thankful. One of the most special was my teacher plays my song during recess at school. Hearing everyone react and sing along was such a surreal feeling—it made me realize my music is reaching people.

Another time, someone told me my song Small Girl in the Big World made them feel seen and understood. That meant so much because that’s exactly why I create music—to connect with people and share something real.

Oh, and when my family adjusted their schedule to support my music career—that’s a response I’ll never forget. It reminds me that I have such an amazing team cheering me on!

7. Do you see yourself as a music nerd?

Oh, totally! I love geeking out about music—it’s my favorite thing to talk about. I’m always exploring new songs, learning instruments, or writing lyrics. I even read sheet music for fun!

Music just feels like a whole universe to me, and I want to know everything about it. So yeah, I guess you could say I’m a proud music nerd! 🎶😊

8. What album do you replay the most?

I’d have to say SOUR by Olivia Rodrigo. Every song feels so real and emotional, and I love how she captures such big feelings in such a raw way. I can listen to it over and over again and still feel all the emotions. It’s definitely one of my go-to albums when I need inspiration or just want to sing my heart out! 🎶💕I’d have to say SOUR by Olivia Rodrigo. 9. What's your favorite movie?

I’d say Titanic! It’s such a beautiful and emotional movie—I love the story and the music. But after watching it, you haveto watch School of Rock! It’s the perfect way to lift your spirits back up and get inspired by music. It’s like the ultimate movie combo for me! 🎬🎶

10. Do you agree with the Pigeon?

Haha, if we’re talking about Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, I have to say no—I don’t think the Pigeon should be driving any buses! But honestly, I kind of get where the Pigeon is coming from. Sometimes you just want to do something wild and unexpected, right? So maybe I agree with the Pigeon’s spirit of adventure, but not the actual bus-driving part! 🚍😂
