1. Hey Ross, super nice to have the chance to chat with you! What first got you into music?
I've always been music-oriented. I have a clear memory of singing Disney songs with my mother when I was VERY young (even too young to have these memories, according to experts). I was probably 3 or 4 years old at the time. It's cliché to say it, but there was always music around growing up. My older sister had a record player and we would listen to music together also.
2. Can you write what was your best performance in your career? How do you remember it?
I'll never forget the release show for my first album ("Hold Fast" 2010). It was the culmination of decades of music lessons, childhood recitals and concerts, lots and lots of songwriting, and that my parents were both in attendance was also very meaningful for me.
3. What memorable responses have you had to your work?
. I've had a few people mention how much they identify with my lyrics—how meaningful the words are to them. I love that music can be so universal and that I can sometimes give someone a way to articulate their own feelings or interpret their own experiences.
4. Do you think that technology is improving lives?
I think certain kinds of technology have been an essential advancement for us. And other kinds of technology, especially when abused, has been a not-so-great thing for our species—and other species, too
5. Do you have a mentor or coach?
I've had so many teachers and I'm grateful for all of them. Most recently, I've been working a lot with Steve Dawson, who is a great songwriter and performer in his own right, and is also an exceptionally kind and giving person. I'm so glad I fell into knowing him. My life is richer for it.
6. What’s your favorite 80’s album?
My favorite 80s album is probably Crowded House's debut album. I knew a few of the Split Enz hits thanks to MTV, but this introduction to Neil Finn's songwriting was a seminal moment for me as a songwriter. I have been consistently blown away by him since.
A close second would probably be "Everything's Different Now" by Til Tuesday—which is practically an Aimee Mann solo record. I have the same love for Aimee that I do for Neil. Just a fantastic and wonderful songwriter.
I'm lucky to have seen them both in concert numerous times.
7. What are you most proud of?
I'm most proud of ... just surviving, I think. There have been periods in my life that have been very challenging. I'm stronger for them.
8. Would you rather stop making music or stop listening to music?
I think I will always make music—even if I'm just tapping on my computer keyboard, I hear it as music sometimes.
9. How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
The internet has both devalued music as an art form and made it easier to make music, and find an audience for it. It doesn't feel like a fair trade sometimes. I'm grateful to have an outlet for my music, and I'm grateful to be able to reach people I wouldn't otherwise reach.
