Artist INTERVIEW: ORPHANBOY

1. Hey Orphanboy, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

I’ve always been big into music since I was a little kid, and I grew up with a lot of old school hip-hop because it's my dad's music of choice. Around 5th grade though I discovered Lil Wayne and became obsessed, and started recording little raps over his beats that I’d rip off YouTube. I kept doing this until around the 8th Grade when I started learning how to make beats because I was really into the idea of being able to make songs completely on my own. In high school I came up with the name Orphanboy. Because I thought it sounded cool, not because I’m actually an Orphan. I’ve been releasing my music under that name for the past eight years now though, so it's stood the test of time.

2. Do you like “All Star” from Smash Mouth?

It's probably the greatest meme record of all time. I think meme culture has turned a lot of otherwise unremarkable songs into classics by giving them extra cultural value. The fact that I know every lyric to All Star mostly through sheer over saturation in memes is a testament to the power of the internet. I think it says something profound, I don’t know what though.

3. Are u listening to any 2022 record often?

Yeah I’ve been obsessed with the album ‘Crest’ by Bladee and Ecco2k. I’ve also been listening to BigBabyGucci’s ‘Iridesence’ a whole bunch. Oh, and my guy BadLuckLex’s album ‘Ghost’, that shit is amazing.

4. Do you listen to podcasts?

No, I have sex.

5. What’s your favorite sport?

Soccer for sure. I think soccer is kind of the only sport that really matters. Like, it's the only one that is actually competitive on a global scale. You can go anywhere in the world and people care about it, it just has a certain gravitas that other sports don’t got. Plus it's fun as hell to play.

6. What’s the best album of all time?

I’d have to say ‘Tha Carter II’ by Lil Wayne, but it's a tough question. It depends on my mood, it could also be ‘Eversince’ by Bladee or ‘Off the Wall’ by Michael. ‘808s and Heartbreaks’ by Kanye is up there for sure too.

7. Are you never gonna give music up or desert us?

Maybe when I’m old and gray and climate change has turned the world into a mere game of kill or be killed. It would probably be hard to find time for music then.

8. What’s your favorite 90’s album?

I gotta say ‘The Infamous’ by Mobb Deep. Or ‘Underground Vol 1’ by Three 6 Mafia.

9. Who is your inspiration?

I have a lot of inspirations. With music Yung Lean is a big inspiration. With life in general it's Che Guevara. I’m also inspired a lot by my friends, especially my friends who also make music. I love the people I keep around me to death, and a lot of them I look up to in certain ways.
