ARTIST INTERVIEW: ME & MELANCHOLY

Interview

Cru cru Me & Melancholy, what first got you into music?

I guess it all started when I was a kid and I was constantly hearing different beats and melodies that I wanted it play. I think I got a very simple sampler when I was 14 and started to sample and tweak those to cool sounding sounds. Then I started some band with friends and started to create songs that we liked. I was pretty obsessed with New Order so I really wanted it to sound just like them.

Are you into Synth Pop? Pet Shop Boys or New Order? Or is this just a stupid question and The Human League and Depeche Mode are the real deal?

I listened so much to synth music in the 80s and until the mid 90s. I actually never listened to Pet shop Boys. Actually if someone said that a song me and my band made sounded like Per Shop Boys, it would make me throw that in the garbage and never play it again 😂

I listened some to Depeche Mode, but not at all as much as New Order. But I guess I consumed most synth music during that time.

What is the best decade for music?

it’s hard to say. Each decade has it’s highlights. At that time it was just so good. Probably this is not the answer you would expect, but I have claimed a few times that 2005 was in my view the best year, when two of my favorite bands, Bloc Party and Kent released the best albums ever released. I can still today listen to these albums from start to finish and just love every tone.

Were the 80s the best decade for electronic music?

I’m not sure, I definetly love the sounds from that time. The analog synths that was used just give me the chills. I think it was a bit more experimentation that is not as common today, now everything should sound the same and fit into some kind of recipy.

How did you manage to make "Never Give Up" such a cinematic song?

The song is based on so much emotions and during that time I had someone near going through some though times. I think in my head there was pictures playing and it all came down to this.

What would you do if you had a time machine?

It would probably be dangerous to do this, but I would use it so often to go back and fix all those thing I or the people closest to me feel bad about. That is in a micro perspective. I guess if I had a time machine I would go back in time and find a way to warn about wars and attacks on innocent people. Haha, I guess that is what I would be doing full time then.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I have had so many lovely responses, people saying the love and are obsessed with an release. It warms my heart and keeps me going on.

Do you think that technology is improving lives?

In some ways it does. I love technology and how it’s made everything easier in your daily work. But I guess it’s the same with everything that you overuse, then it could be very problematic for those who spend more time with it, scrolling social medias for hours that could be used better.

Then of course there are some scary scenarios with the development of AI.

Do you wanna leave a message for your fans?

Thank you so much for all your love, it means everything to me!

Do you agree with the Pigeon?

Of course, I don’t understand how someone could not agree with the Pigeon! It should be forbidden not to agree.

Review

Check out the original album by Me & Melancholy: "Under the Cover of Darkness"!

"Never Give Up", track number 8, wins us over with its catchy synthesizers and spacey textures. Here we can hear our better half's heart beating for us and this encourages us to cry and never give up. The progression of this single becomes more challenging, later reminding us of the initial synthetic monomer, which was very well done. All this euphoria that characterizes the bombastic production contrasts perfectly with the melancholy in the lyrics, making me believe that I'm listening to a more modern and updated version of the legendary Pet Shop Boys. "One Of These Days" is also a cinematic highlight on this electronic soundtrack, which is without a doubt a victory for synth pop!

The Pigeon added the new single to his Alternative Gems playlist on Spotify.
