Interview
Cru cru Matyascorvinus, nice to have you back! I already know that music was given to when you were very little like mother's milk, so what would you do if you had a time machine?
Very good question. Propably nothing. There are good moments, there are bad moments. But without these moments I would not be me. Well, maybe I would try to correct the worst f…k ups I have done in my life. What others have made? Nevermind. Anyhow, I have learned some lessons the hard way. Some, the easier way. But together, they are lessons that molded this person.
What is "Across The Acheron" and why it's so cinematic?
Across the Acheron is an allegory for passing away, for example. The recording is influenced by the first polar trip to Antarctica by sail ship Belgica, and its crew which had to endure the hardships beyond imagination. Acheron is also one of the rivers in Hades of Greek mythology. In fact, the title has many meanings. If you’ve studied the subject, you might find them all.
Glad to hear it’s cinematic. Maybe it’s due to my imagination and strong “visions” in my head, what comes to illustrating the background of each song. Despite being instrumental, every song has a story and a “movie” in my mind. And this happens to be the way the songs come out! I could not do it other way.
What is the nonstop jukebox in your head playing right now? Is it still ELO?
Nonstop jukebox changes songs regularly. Some songs being a real nuisance, sticking in my ear like glue! To be honest, ELO’s Telephone Line has been on the list recently. But two most persistent pieces of all time have been Scarred For Life by Rose Tattoo and Hung, Drawn And Quartered by Raven. They bothered me for weeks! Anyway, theres ALWAYS something playing.
Are you still working in pest control? Ifyes, how is that business goin'? Did you have to kill a lot of birds tant transmit diseases?
Yes, I am. Business has been good, even too hectic lately. I had to take a break in order to stay sane. Birds? I’m not dealing with them. We also do not hunt or kill birds, but there are better methods to keep them away. Preventive measures. Besides, I could not kill a bird. They have a very special place in my heart. I love birds. The more alive, the better.
As an old school radio listener, can you name us your favorite stations to listen to?
In order to avoid s…y music, I prefer talk shows. I’m listening Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE). It’s in my blood and it’s not commercial. I hate commercials. Especially on the radio. For me, classic radio is sacred. For example, I follow news of the world actively, very actively. And this is what commercial radio cannot offer. At home, I have not listened any radio for over six years now. There is silence. Which I enjoy the most.
4. Here at pigeon_opinion we've been hearing a lot of ELO, mostly "Out of the" Blue (do you believe that I got it in CD for just 2euros at my local pawn shop?! - I'm always playing it in my car when I have to drive through th ecity at night, it's awesome!) Can you rank every ELO album from your least favorite to the one you consider their magnum opus?
ELO is a band that has been there for my entire life. In my childhood, it was everywhere here in Finland. I have heard it a lot. So, there has never been an urge to buy their records. I know precisely what Jeff Lynne has been doing and what the band has been doing. Hereby, I haven’t bought their records but listened carefully all the essentials, everywhere I could. And it’s a lot.
Will you name us your top 5 songs from ELO?
- Roll Over Beethoven
- Do You Want My Love?
- Don’t Bring Me Down
- Evil Woman
- Telephone Line
What memorable responses have you had to your work?
To my surprise, there have been many! Especially with this new recording. It seems to be received so well, beyond any of my expectations. This kind of music is not an actual chart topper, but it has been very nice that there are lots of people really getting it. This is memorable for me.
What is your creative process like?
I always start with completely blank mind. I place my fingers somewhere on the fretboard and start to listen. Whether it sounds nice, I memorize it. Sometimes I remember it, sometimes I forget it. I never write anything down. Never. I also do not use any official guitar chords or common practices of guitar. Or maybe I do, without knowing it. Everything happens intuitively and comes from some place I do not even know. Later on, I cannot remember anything of the process or the moment the magic happened. So, if you ask me what was it like to do this or that song, I do not remember. There is no planning or scheme, whatsoever. Everything happens in the moment.
What were the very best music projects for the music industry that happened in the underground scene, instead of happening in the offices of a record company?
For me the best things happened are: punk-rock, NWOBHM, post/hardcore punk, goth movement, psychobilly, thrash metal, black metal, death metal, grindcore. These genres started to evolve under the official radar. Without the support of big record companies.
Do you continue to be fascinated by DIY projects?
Absolutely! If you have the fire inside, don’t waste your time waiting. Just do it. You, yourself, are the master of your own art. Make your own rules and stay loyal to yourself. And f…k the rest.
Do you still agree with the Pigeon?
Yes, I do. And I always will. I’m not a boy anymore, but that does not mean I have given up. I will support the underground. This I have promised.
Review
'Check out the original EP by Matyascorvinus: "Across the Acheron"!
The title track of the EP, "Across the Acheron" opens it in style. The drones establish an atmosphere of mystery and suspense, almost alien that enters the realm of the metaphysical, while guitar chords as detailed and as genuine as Nick Drake's transcend us to a watercourse where I am at peace and tranquility with nature. Serenity reigns in this purely instrumental piece supported by surreal fabulous production, but for a few moments the acoustics become more developed and more elaborate, stimulating all our senses.
