ARTIST INTERVIEW: KILRAVROCK

Kilravrock - Incompability][ Working Class Hero

(•)> cru cru Kilravock, what first got you into music?

Hello there! I was a bit of a late bloomer with music and when I finally started identifying with stuff it was music of the previous generations, it was in my late teens I started to listen to music and I really started identifying with 70s/80s speed metal. For a long time Megadeth was my favorite band, and I was jamming to all sorts of bands like Motörhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio. Eventually I moved into more of a heavy rock, psychedelic, prog phase and I was listening to a lot of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Rainbow.

As I grew older I started gravitating towards grunge, stoner rock, and sludge metal and that’s what I was primarily rocking in my 20s when I was making music with Megaton, my old stoner/sludge metal band.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve dropped a lot of the weird metal gatekeeping shit that metal heads tend to do and I’ve embraced pretty much every genre to varying degrees, though I’d still consider myself a rocker overall.

(•)> Awesome music journey!!! You were really hopping through so many genres of the rock sphere aha

Indeed! I use to check out websites of guys documenting and reviewing their CD collections with their websites in the early 2000s, so I had a lot of exposure to music thanks to that. I don't think most of those websites are around anymore though, sadly. The internet has gotten very small it feels like.

(•)> What's your favorite album from the 80s speed metal scene? And what's the best prog album of all time? And last but not least, what records from the grunge, stoner rock and sludge metal days are you still coming back to the most?

Although this came out in 1990, close enough, I'd probably say that Judas Priest, Painkiller is my favorite speed metal record. Schizophrenia by Sepultura or Overkill by Motorhead as runner ups though.

Hard to pick one prog album, there's so many I listen to, but let's go with Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime since it's the first that popped into my head. Side One of 2112 by Rush is a contender purely for side one along though.

I finished my recent line-up of records for my music podcast Side One/Side B with Dave and Steve, and I'm going to be showing Crack the Skye by Mastodon, Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden, and Warp Riders by The Sword to my buddies, we already reviewed Murder The Mountains by Red Fang last season. Still listen to Blues For The Red Sun by Kyuss a ton, and the Red and Blue albums by Baroness are still in my rotation often.

Maybe I should have said Crack The Skye for my favorite prog album.... hmmm

(•)> Did Megaton had any hits worth checking out?

Our most popular song was Alcoholic Wizards, which is a song we wrong about drunken wizards getting mad that some patrons entered their bar and turning everyone into small animals and then burning down the bar. It was popular enough that my next band Valley of Shadows continued playing it even after Megaton broke up.

(•)> nowadays, as a music nerd who has embraced pretty much every genre, what music genre do you enjoy the least?

There's a lot of Country music I love, but there's also a lot of Country music I hate so that's probably the best answer I have for that. It tends to be the more mainstream side of genres I don't like, whether it be country, hip hop, or rock.

(•)> Are you still going to live shows? When was the last time you went to one?

Not as much as I like, but I think the last big show I went to was TOOL a few years ago. On the smaller side, I really like watching jazz and blues live performances. Caught a bunch of different types of live acts when I visited Nashville recently. There's a concert going on in every building there at the same time it feels like.
