Review
Get Ahead" uses an ominous introduction that sounds more like an icy, adverse wind blowing off the track. On the other hand, within the song we find comfort in JJR's words: "Life is written, It's not read, Get Ahead." In other words, we have to be proactive and create our own future instead of waiting for it to be destined. However, this need to feel that we always have to be one step ahead of everyone else throughout life can be very exhausting and result in fatal burnout. This is perfectly encapsulated in the intimate and genuine strings that remind me of Nick Drake's painful and surreal magnum opus: Pink Moon. All in all, I see J.JR's "Get Ahead" as a bittersweet existentialist song that always leaves a tear in the corner of my eye.
