Artist INTERVIEW: IREQ SAVAGE

1. Hey Ireq, super nice to have the chance to chat with you! What first got you into music?

A good friend suggested I try it when I was in the army. I always wrote lyrics and was around music because of my family. I did it in my down time on deployments to connect with new people that made music. But I’ve always had a desire to make songs. I wanted to be able to listen to a song I made. The ability to create art in an auditory way drew me to creating music as well.

2. What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as an artist?

I think something that I continue to do to ensure growth as an artist is by listening to a lot of music. I try to listen to as much as possible when I’m in a receptive phase. I read as much as possible for more vocabulary. I try to study the art of rapping because I’m passionate about it. I watch other artist process. Seeing how other musicians craft songs is interesting to me and I think it helps me learn. I try to take care of my vocal cords by staying hydrated… Mmmmm Oh I want to get better at other ways of utilizing my voice, like by screaming or singing. I think the thing I try to master is the process of feeling inspired, creating, and the down time between not being inspired. Also, I think the most important thing for me, and my creative process is living life and having new experiences.

3. Where is the best place in the world you’ve ever been to?

The best place I’ve been too is hard. I feel like I haven’t seen enough of the world to answer that… I can say, my favorite beach I’ve been to is in the Bahamas.

4. Did you ever had any beef in the music industry?

I don’t really have any beef with anyone. There maybe people that don’t like me for how I was in the past, or I may not roll with the same people anymore but, it’s no hate. Life carries people in different directions and sometimes it’s for the best.

5. Would you describe your perfect day?

My perfect day would be one that has a lot of sun but a nice number of clouds to catch a break. 88 degrees F light breezy with cool snap to it. The destination in the morning would have to be a trip to water for swimming. It must be a pool, spring, or an ocean. I think it would involve a gathering where you get to see a lot of the friends that you don’t see often. Lunch is breakfast food. Afternoon is movie, dinner Is a family heavy feast that evolves into a bonfire situation because night low is 65.

6. What’s your favorite movie?

My favorite movie has to be a tie between Predator, Waking Life, Inception, & Terminator 2: Judgement Day

7. What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

I think the biggest challenge in being an artist is keeping the negative noise out, staying consistent, & navigating the business side.

8. What makes you different from others?

I think my story makes me stand out. My journey has been wild. I did time in the military and went of 4 tours. I’m from Dallas, TX but I live in Florida. I’m a father, husband, brother, engineer, rapper, video editor with a bachelor’s degree. I heavily consume manga & dinosaur facts. I must be in water. I’m a cancer.

9. What was the most difficult challenge you faced?

Most difficult challenge I faced is myself. I think to break the cycle of generational trauma has been extremely hard for me. Some of the habits or almost instinctual… I want to be a better me for my wife and daughters. I want to not continue to life a life where I hurt people close to me because I can’t deal with myself.
