1. Hey Hallbeck, super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?
Totally The Sweet! I was 10 and they were the first band i ever saw live. Brian Connolly was such a rockstar! Later, in my teens i picked up a guitar. Being a punk back then it was just something you did! I played my first gig ever as a bass player though. I was 16 and my bass was clad in plaid flannel cloth. It sounded like crap, looked awesome! We had 15 minutes to play, opening up for a big band in Sweden at the time. but in our minds we were the stars, so we kept playing until they shut down the power on the stage. :D Such rebels!
2. What’s your favorite discography?
So looking at a complete catalog of music...
Hmm... I think i have to go with David Bowie. I think he is one of the very few artists who has consistently managed to be relevant. Going through 40 years of music, he was always cutting edge and pushing the envelope of creativity. Redefining himself so many times and never falling into the trap of becoming a second hand replica of himself.
I wold also mention Rush here. While there are a few albums i don.t think have aged that well, they were always true to themselves first. This means that every album is different and every album is quality.
3. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?
Plenty! I am an avid boardgamer. I hang out with friends playing great boardgames and drink craft beer. It is all very geeky. I have a vintage boat. It needs a lot of my time. I love working on it though.
4. What’s your favorite album?
That’s a tough one as on any given day i have different faves. But my top 5 albums i always come back to are in no particular order:
- Counting Crowes, August and everything after. Beautiful songs with a delicate production. Duritz sings his heart out on every song.
- U2, Achtung baby. I know i know, should be The Joshua Tree right? But i love all the dirt on this record. The distorted sounds and the Bono singing on top of it. To me, this is their best album while other records might have the best single. Like Pride or New Years Day for example.
- Genesis, Foxtrot. This is a fantastic album with an absolutely atrocious production. But the songs! Man they are so so good. Can Utility and the Coastliners! Just, wow!
- Mew, Frengers. This Danish band keeps staying on my playlists. I love the prog roots and pop sensibilities on top of that. They pack more ideas in any one song than most bands do on a whole record.
The Sweet, Give us a wink. What a fantastic album! Every song is a rock n roll masterpiece. Still think that. My 10 year old me would be happy.
And one more as an honorable mention: Deftones, Koi no yokan. I just love the way he makes his voice work on top of all that attack. He sings, he isn’t screaming. While i do love a good screamer vocal, like Gojira for example, i love melodies more. And Deftones have always been able to deliver riffs along with great melodies.
5. What was your favorite subject in school?
What was your favorite subject in school?
History and social studies. I am a very political person. I am (prodly) a sjw as i believe it is our duty to leave the world a better place than when we got here. We need to fight for equality all over the world and for everyone. This involves climate, LBTQ, race and gender.
6. What are you focusing on right now?
I am in the process of writing and recording three or four more songs. They will go under production phase real soon. I plan a new single in early September.
7. What’s the biggest accomplishment you have made with your career to this point?
It kinda depends. The biggest thing i ever played was a festival stage in The Netherlands back in 1993. But i think for me personally, stepping up and owning my voice over the last few years. Daring to step up to the microphone is a big step for anyone. Singing is laying bare who you are. You cannot hide anymore. If you don’t like you guitar tone, you get a different guitar or add another pedal or something. Your voice is what it is. You can get better at using it. But no matter how much i try, i will never be Bono, i will be me. So i will have to accept my voice and then learn to embrace how it sounds. It is a big thing! My band Charkoal has been a great vehicle for this as i have been able to experiment a lot.
8. What’s your favorite 80’s artist?
I think i will go with U2. Unpopular choice i am sure, but i loved everything they did until Pop. Since then i haven’t really paid much attention.
9. Who inspired you to make music?
I’ll tell you who inspired me to get back into music! It was Wilco! I went to see them in Stockholm, must have been 11 years ago or something. I had given up on music, but after a disastrous relationship ended i was a complete mess. I got invited by a friend and got completely godsmacked by them. Jeff Tweedy has such intimacy in all his songs and this was a band of great musicians playing together performing songs, not a show with big lights and stuff, just a band of players playing music. I loved it! I felt that i should be able to do something like that. Not americana, just try to write songs that mattered to me, and if they really mattered to me, maybe they would matter to someone else as well. So yeah, Jeff Tweedy, i owe you one man!
10. Do You Agree with the Pigeon?
