ARTIST INTERVIEW: GARY DRANOW

Interview

Hey Gary Dranow , super nice to have the chance to chat with you again. I already know that you still have your very first guitar that your mum bought you after you heard Eric Clapton's magic on the radio. That's wholesome. Can you still play the guitar behind your back or over your head?

Yes, I sure can, but because I wear a Texas Hatters Plateau Hat, I am limited to just playing behind my back on rare occasions. I will be seventy in March, after all 😊

What’s your favorite song from your very first band: Ultra Manic?

Honestly, I can't remember any of Karl Macura's songs, just that I had fun playing them, especially the harmonies on the solos.

Would you rather stop making music or stop listening to music?

I'd stop listening way before I'd stop making music. Honestly, I listen to various songs on Sirius XM Radio. Lately; I’ve been listening to the Pearl Jam Station.

Can you name another great act from the 60's without being Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, The Beatles or The Three Kings (Albert, Freddie and BB)?

John Mayall's Blues Breakers, The Kinks, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, to name a few.

What do you love so much about Robert Johnson? And which record would you recommend me from him?

His skill as a finger-style player from the Delta was extraordinary. His songs were visceral and groundbreaking. He influenced so many musicians he's got to be considered one of the greatest bluesmen ever.

I'm looking for a guitar in order to lear how to play the damn thing. Would you accept 1M for one of your guitars?

I've never owned or sold a million-dollar guitar, but I have two 1958 Les Pauls and a '61; they are worth a pretty penny. I will leave them for my wife to do as she pleases with the help of Drew Berlin after I am gone. I am known as a passionate collector of guitars, and I strongly relate to my collection.

What is "Shimmering" and why is it so nostalgic?

"Shimmering" is one of my favorite songs, though I had to get permission from my wife, Liz, to put it out. If Janine is still around, I hope she can hear it. I've tried to find her on Facebook, but no luck.

What's your favorite record from Chris Cornell?

Like a Stone, hands down.

Have you ever played Pokémon Emerald? If yes, which starter did you pick? If not, just tell me your favorite pocket monster.

I don't even know what Pokémon is, so I don't have an answer. Call me square 😊

How is your prostate today?

I have to plan my trips to the men's room on long drives and pee like a "Racehorse" in the mornings, thanks to Flowmax 😉

Review

"Digitize" quickly creates an artificial and synthetic world, which is more like an electronic mirror of our world. In this metallic track, Gary Dranow takes a risk and puts his powerful voice into other adventures that are more erosive and rebellious than the ones we've been used to. Epic from start to finish, constantly refined by electronic components, "Digitize" and its face-melting guitars meteorite everything in their path just like an uncontrollable musical storm should!!! These corrupt cities have reaped the storm they sowed and in the last third this single still has the audacity to surprise us with a futuristic language that leaves this apocalypse in a cliffhanger!

The Pigeon added the new single to his Weekly Gems playlist on Spotify. You can check out the released music below. If you like what you hear, make sure to follow along so you can stay on top of future releases!
