ARTIST INTERVIEW: FIONA AMAKA

Fiona Amaka - Different

(•)> Cru cru, what first got you into music?

I loved writing short stories and verse first, then that took me into songwriting and singing. I was 17 when I joined my first band, which was a busy function band playing blues covers. It was a great place to learn.

(•)> Have you ever won one of those competitions?

I've never been drawn towards entering singing competitions, so I haven't won any!

(•)> Have you ever been afraid of the stage?

Not really. Of course I get a bit of stage fright like anyone else -but I tell myself I'm there because I want to be. Really big stages can be a bit scary, especially if you can't connect with the audience.

(•)> Who's your favorite singer and which songwriter inspires you the most?

Now that's a really tough question, and the answer can literally change by the minute! Favourite singers - I could almost eat the voices of Lauryn Hill, Carleen Anderson, Stevie Nicks, Miley Cyrus, Tems, Luther Vandross. Thats not an exhaustive list. Don't ask me to pick one!! Inspirational songwriters - Stevie Nicks, Matt Redman, I also love the songwriting of James Arthur.

(•)> What's album do you replay the most?

I very rarely play full albums, but I'd say Lighthouse by Francis of Delirium and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins possibly get the most spins as albums.

(•)> What would you do if you had a time machine?

Whizz off to the beautiful garden of Eden, and tell Eve to just say no!

(•)> How is your perfect day?

Starts with a long walk where there are lots of tall trees, some beach time in the afternoon sun hanging out with my family, and some good Campari spritz and apperativo towards the end of it.

(•)> What film means the most to you?

I love music documentary type films that dig deep into the story behind the artist. I thought Mahalia (about the legendary Mahalia Jackson) was brilliant.

(•)> Do you agree with the Pigeon?

Absolutely. Cru Cru!

(•)> What should the Pigeon listen to tomorrow?

Messy by Lola Young and Minds under my skin my Bethannie Hare
