ARTIST INTERVIEW: EDIE YVONNE

Interview

1. Cru cru Edie Yvonne, welcome to another interview with the Pigeon! Why is your new release: "Girl Code" so catchy as hell?!

EY: Thank you for having me back!!!! I love Girl Code because it really frames the type of record I want to make. I was able to work with producer Rio Root on the track which was a new experience for me and I think I learned a lot. Maddy Simmen was in the room collaborating on the writing. I brought the lyric “You always have my back just to stab it…” as a point of departure and we were off to the races.

2. What's the "Girl Code"? Is the "Girl Code" similar to the Bro Code of "How I Met Your Mother"?

EY: I think it is a call for care and compassion. The Girl Code manifesto is attached. As a 15 year old girl who just started high school you see how people treat each other and I dream for an alternate reality where kindness is king and compassion is cool.

3. Will you rank Rihanna and Britney's albums from your favorite to your least favorite? What's the hit you love the most from each of these female artists?

EY: I love them both so much. My favorite Rihanna songs are Only Girl (In The World) and Don’t Stop The Music, but there’s so many I love. I also have the ANTI album in my room, I play it on repeat all the time. For Britney, I love Toxic and Me Against The Music, Circus but it’s so hard to choose!

4. Despite you plead the 5th, a tiny little bird told me you see the 70's 80s and 90s as the best decades for music? Why is that and what makes those eras so special?

EY: Well 70s funk and folk (Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament…Jonie Mitchell, Bob Dylan), 80's disco and pop (from Donna Summer to Madonna), and 90s alternative rock and hip hop (from Missy Elliot, Aailiyah, to Soundgarden) and then icons like Prince and Bowie who transcend eras….

5. Everybody loves ice cream. What's your favorite ice cream flavor?

EY: I love Chocolate Covered Strawberries from McConnell’s and any Bumsan flavor. And Earl Grey at Van Leeuwen.

6. What are your thoughts on the current indie scene?

EY: It is an exciting time for indie artists! There seem to be new and alternative paths for building audience and connection with fans. My favorite is seeing acts I love in small intimate venues. I just heard SkyeChristy and Haiden play live in a cool venue close to home and it was an incredible experience when you have the opportunity to see artists you love in that way!

7. Besides Mazzy Star, what other dream pop acts are you a fan of?

EY: The songs I have on repeat are Lana Del Rey’s “A&W”, SkyeChristy’s “Black Lake”, Beabadoobee’s “perfect pair”, and Lola Young’s “Conceited”.

8. Are you familiar with the film: "Mean Girls"?

EY: Of course! Not even kidding, I rewatched it tonight. Girl Code and Queen Bee are giving very Mean Girls vibes for sure.

9. What are you most proud of?

EY: I’m proud of my single Stain. It’s about my birthmark, and I feel very proud to share a song as personal as Stain.

10. Do you agree with the Pigeon?

EY: I appreciate your amazing support of emerging indie artists. Thank you for that and happy holidays!

Review

The rain falls lightly and slowly until it is extinguished by Edie Yvonne's genuine acoustic chords. Intimacy reaches its maximum level in "No Rain" when you meet the sweet, romantic voice of this woman who transports me to my most sensual dreams. Although the production is a cloud where we can undress with our face-half after a fascinating night, on the other hand the lyrics are much more bittersweet and even confess to having slept all day. This nostalgic room where the rain doesn't fall reminds me so much of the flame of love gradually dying out, just like in Richard Linklater's iconic trilogy.

The Pigeon added the new single to his Weekly Gems playlist on Spotify. You can check out the released music below. If you like what you hear, make sure to follow along so you can stay on top of future releases!
