ARTIST INTERVIEW: CALCOU

Interview

What first got you into music?

The recorder lessons we all had to take in school.

What is "About last night (still dreaming)" and why is it so nostalgic and relaxing?

It’s the latest single from my upcoming album „Murmuration“. I wrote it together with SBSTN when he was in Berlin for a few months. The piano in my studio was really detuned at that time and I’ve prepared the felts so you can muffle it quite heavily to create really warm, dreamy sounds. That might have given it that nostalgic, relaxing feel.

What memorable responses have you had to your work so far?

Being featured in Clash Mag certainly was a highlight or being on rotation at SiriusXM chill. Besides that I really love sharing my music with friends before it’s released and getting their reaction.

Do you see yourself as music - nerd?

Probably hard to deny if you spend all day every day listening to or producing music.

What’s your favorite artist from the electronic and soul scenes?

That changes all the time. Right now I’m a big fan of logic1000 because she just dropped her new album and I think it’s amazing.

Can you tell us a cringe memory of yours?

I once had a show with a friend together in a big night club in Berlin called Ritter Butzke. We played live synthesizers and drum-machines but suddenly everything went out of sync. Our monitor channel was not working so we had to re-sync using the Ableton metronome on the full sound system for a few seconds. It felt incredibly awkward to just hear metronome-ticks in a club slightly approaching each other until we had it in time again and could continue.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

I wasn’t in the music business before the internet. To me it brings a lot of advantages to create and distribute music in the digital era. I can create everywhere I want, I can collaborate with other artists from all over the world, I don’t need much gear to get a decent sound, I can release and distribute music myself and I’m actually earning quite a bit from streaming.

But of course there are lots of challenging developments. As soon as you release streaming-unfriendly music that doesn’t immediately fit into a playlist like „Beats to think, study“ or other easy-listening situations, it’s hard to get the listener’s attention.

It’s also annoying to see how after those first exciting years of disruption major labels and other big players in the industry have now managed to take back their roles as gatekeepers and sometimes create even bigger monopolies than they had before.

And creating content to promote your music for at least 5 different social media channels is a lot of work that leaves less time to create meaningful music.

How would you describe your perfect day?

Coffe, Studio, Nap, Nature, Dinner, Sports, Concert

What’s your favorite movie of all time?

Again, I don’t really have an all time favorite. Lately I really liked Poor things.

Do you sing in the shower? If yes, what songs?

No, don’t sing.

Do you agree with the Pigeon?

Always.

Review

"About last night (still dreaming)" is born from delicate, extremely soft pianos with blissful textures and is propelled by naked beats that are simply spellbinding!!! Calcou, unlike the society we live in, lets us just exist in our beds and allows us to dream on those dreary days when we don't want to think, but just exist! Shoot out for this experimental production that through distortion, sad filters always augmented by the marvelous piano keys acquires unique properties that are more like magic in this mostly instrumental hip-hop single.
