Artist INTERVIEW: AINSLEY COSTELLO

1. Hey Ainsley Costello super nice to have the chance to chat with you. What first got you into music?

My dad is super musical so I was always hearing so much different music around the house, and going to see his bands perform. When I was young I always knew it was going to be music for me, so it was only a matter of when I would pick up the guitar or start songwriting! I started playing guitar when I was 7 and writing songs when I was 12.

2. Do you like to listen to Elvis Costello?

I do! I have a casual listening relationship with Mr. C, though almost everyone I meet is disappointed that we’re not actually related, seeing that his real name is Declan MacManus.

3. What’s your favorite song?

I am not too proud to say that I am loving Kate Bush right now having heard “Running Up That Hill” so epically portrayed in the new season of Stranger Things! Either that or “Free” by Florence and the Machine off her new album right now!

4. What’s your favorite 70’s artist?

Definitely Queen. I fell into the vast crevasse that is their discography last year and have not come out.

5. What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next 5 to 10 years?

In 5-10 years I would love to have put another full length album out, and be headlining small clubs like The Mercy Lounge in Nashville.

6. Are you a music fan?

I’m definitely a music fan! I listen to music almost all day everyday, and am very much an audiophile. My parents raised me on super diverse stuff that has been in brain for years that I’ll pluck out whenever I need to cover something new for a live show.

7. How do you structure your day?

It depends on the day! Show days are their whole other thing for me, but I like to wake up and get some tea, scroll TikTok to get a few ideas for content I need to make for the day, do schoolwork (I’m a junior at Berklee College of Music online!) have a write or rehearsal if it’s in the schedule, shove something sweet in my mouth before I go to bed, and call it a day!

8. What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Though it hasn’t been told to me, the line “compare where you are to where you wanna be and you’ll get nowhere” from Sara Bareilles’ (one of my ALL TIME favorite artists) song “Uncharted” is something I try to tell my self everyday so I don’t get discouraged by seeing everyone else’s highlight reel on Instagram or TikTok

9. What is the biggest challenge of being an artist?

I think it differs from person to person, but social media is the kicker for me, especially since I come from a generation that loves to compare ourselves to each other. But I try to look at TikTok as a place where I can connect with my fans and the content they create with my music, and it’s much more exciting that way!
