Kanye West - The College Dropout (2004)
The "College Dropout" is an exciting and refreshing game-changer. As a freshman Kanye presents a theatrical satire with hilarious skits, playful bars, and exquisite samples. I'm always rooting for Ye as a braggadocious rookie with his colorful and full-of-life beats. Also, the perfectly placed features surpass every single limitation that this debut might've had.

My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004)
(•)> In "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge" after losing a gunfight a man makes a deal with the Devil. The man has to go on a murderous rampage collecting the souls of evil men to be reunited with his lover. Otherwise, he'll be dragged to hell. I agree, this cinematic concept with traits of horror could've been more fleshed out, but it's undeniable that in their sophomore these emo kids turn up their theatrical performances and dark aesthetic to one thousand delivering gothic bangers that hit all the right notes and hold together on their own.

Interpol - Antics (2004)
(•)> Interpol sophomore it's a slight downgrade compared to their amazing debut, but these guitar-driven tunes still make for a pretty good album.
The Killers - Hot Fuss (2004)
(•)> The Killers' overblown debut delivers the kind of action and nostalgia that I can only find in summer blockbusters, PlayStation 2 or arcade games. These exciting post-punk revival fusions with new wave, disco and indie ask for néon lights and beg for a stadium. "Mr. Brightside" is an instantly recognizable anthem on jealousy for the ages and Brandon Flowers stands out as a one-of-a-kind frontman with his explosive voice. Unfortunately, "Hot Fuss" sometimes slows down with atmospheric and sober tracks that don't fit the band as well as the exciting arena hits.

Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News (2004)
(•)> After aiming for the moon, Modest Mouse aims for the mainstream shifting gears and reinventing themselves with new tricks, and a cleaner and more polished production for their next release, “Good News For People Who Love Bad News”. It opens showcasing a lot of single power with “The World At Large”, “Float On” and “Ocean Breaths Salty”. These psychedelic tunes expand the boundaries of indie rock on the radio slipping existential themes and exaggerated inflections under catchy riffs, pumping drums, and humming melodies pleasant to the ears. The rats infiltrated the industry from the inside as secret agents and made “Float On” (what a banger!) everyone's introduction to their one-of-a-kind music. On the other hand, Tom Wait's inspired “Bury Me With It”, “Bukowski”, “This Devil's Workday” and “Satin In A Coffin” work as theatrical tracks that enrich this unique record with eccentric performances, odd horns, captivating banjo, tragic violins, orchestral harmonies, and surreal scenarios. On “Bury Me With It” Modest Mouse reflects on their legacy and stands their ground as hummingbirds not willing to move out of the honey that comes from the mainstream, for better or for worse. And right after delivering this bad news, they proceed to party in hell with the Devil himself on “Dance Hall”! I don't want to have to hang myself on treason since I’m more fond of the rats than the hummingbirds, but I can still see Modest Mouse experimenting and putting their blood, sweat, and tears on the tape here. Like every other project of theirs, it’s a dense listen and there’s a lot to unpack. Besides Isaac’s pen being as sharp and pessimistic as ever, I appreciate “Good News For People Who Love Bad News” for offering a diverse pallet of colors and sounds, a wide range of influences they wear proudly on their wings, and tiny little details or blissful effects that I'll miss if I blink. No one loves early Modest Mouse more than me. One might blame it on the Tetons and say that this record does not sound like Modest Mouse. One might even say that sounds anonymous (yikes!), but please tell me another band that sounds like this. That's right, you can't. Because no one sounds like Modest Mouse. No band sounds as melancholic as good ol’ Modest Mouse and no one sounds as catchy as new Modest Mouse, except Modest Mouse itself.

Green Day - American Idiot (2004)
(•)> Green Day's biggest commercial hit to date is an arena-friendly rock opera with social and political commentary that follows the odyssey of Jesus of Suburbia an outcast who goes on a life-changing journey. A striking and iconic cover and an ambitious concept don't save "American Idiot" from sounding almost anonymous in the alternative rock scene and overcompressed as hell!
